Jack DunnJuly 13, 2025 at 12:48 AM

Jeff Lynne's ELO canceled its July 13 performance at BST Hyde Park in London early Saturday morning after doctors advised frontman and band co-founder Lynne, who is currently "battling a systemic infection," that taking the stage is "simply not possible." The show was billed as the group's final concert ever.

"Jeff Lynne is heartbroken to report that he will not be able to perform at tomorrow's BST Hyde Park show," read a statement from BST Hyde's reps. "Jeff has been battling a systemic infection and is currently in the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time nor will he be able to reschedule. The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff's mind today — and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time."

The concert, announced back in October of 2024, was the final stop after the legendary rock group ended its Farewell Tour in North America.

In a follow-up statement, BST Hyde announced that Sunday's event will be entirely canceled in the wake of Lynne's exit. Saturday will mark the final night of BST Hyde, and the organization will offer full refunds to ticket holders.

ELO, originally founded as The Electric Light Orchestra in 1970, was co-founded by Lynne along with The Move frontmen Roy Wood and Bev Bevan. The group pioneered a fusion of rock with orchestral instrumentation, releasing such iconic hits as "Mr. Blue Sky," "Don't Bring Me Down," "Evil Woman," "Livin Thing," "Turn To Stone" and "Telephone Line." The band split in 1986, but Lynne marched on as a solo act and producer. He went on to collaborate with artists such as George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh and Bryan Adams.

Palestinian-American beaten to death in West Bank, family says

The relatives of American Saifullah Kamel Musallet told CBS News on Saturday that the 20-year-old man from Tampa was beaten to death Friday by Israeli settlers while he was visiting family in the Palestinian-majority West Bank.

Musallet was meant to be headed back to Florida this week, his relatives said. He was killed in a confrontation with Israeli settlers while protecting his family's land in the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, according to his family and the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Saifullah Kamel Musallet, a Palestinian-American from Tampa, was killed in a confrontation with Israeli settlers in the West Bank. / Credit: Courtesy from the Musallet Family

Settlers allegedly surrounded Musallet for more than three hours, blocking an ambulance and paramedics from reaching him, according to a statement from the family. His younger brother carried him to an ambulance after the mob cleared, but Musallet died before reaching the hospital, the statement said.

Mohammed Saber Zaben, the head of the local municipality of al Sharqiya, told CBS News on Friday that the majority of the landowners in his region are Palestinian-Americans who hold U.S. citizenship and that some have been physically attacked and had their property destroyed amid ongoing tensions between settlers and residents. He said the settlers have prevented Palestinian farmers from accessing their lands as part of a plan to establish an illegal outpost on the privately owned lands. Under international law, the areas are known as A and B within the Occupied West Bank.

Palestinian-American Saifullah Kamel Musallet in an undated photo. / Credit: Provided by the Musallet Family

"He worked at his family's ice cream shop in Tampa and was loved by so many people there. He was always kind and compassionate," said Musallet's cousin Fatmah Muhammad, who is a business owner in Southern California.

A second man was fatally shot in the attacks, according to the health ministry, which said the man was left bleeding for hours.

A State Department spokesperson confirmed that a U.S. citizen died in the West Bank on Friday, but referred questions about any investigation into the incident to Israel's government. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem asked Israeli authorities for further details and is providing consular assistance to the family, according to an embassy spokesperson.

"We are aware of reports regarding a Palestinian civilian killed and a number of injured Palestinians as a result of the confrontation, and they are being looked into by the ISA and Israel Police," a statement on Friday from the Israel Defense Forces said.

Musallet's family, meanwhile, called for the U.S. to investigate.

"We demand the U.S. State Department lead an immediate investigation and hold the Israeli settlers who killed Saif accountable for their crimes," the family's statement read.

The FBI and the White House did not respond to CBS News' requests for comment.

It is not clear at this time who was among the group of settlers accused of beating Musallet to death. The State Department said it was up to the Israeli police to investigate.

In January, President Trump rescinded U.S. sanctions on far-right settler groups and extremists accused of violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Then-President Joe Biden had instituted sanctions in 2024 on persons undermining stability in the West Bank, and the State Department instituted visa bans and put sanctions on a violent Israeli settlement and the director of a group accused of undermining stability in the West Bank

The Treasury Department also specifically sanctioned the Hilltop Youth, a violent extremist group for attacking Palestinians and their property in the West Bank, as well as a settlement organization involved with individuals accused of committing violence.

During his first term, Mr. Trump rescinded the longstanding U.S. policy that settlements are illegal, before it was restored by Biden.

Violence in the West Bank is on the rise, with Israeli settlers expanding their efforts to occupy land in the contested region. Musallet is the fifth American to be killed in the West Bank since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7, 2023.

Iran says it would resume nuclear talks with US if guaranteed no further attacks

Iran's foreign minister said Saturday that his country would accept a resumption of nuclear talks with the U.S. if there were assurances of no more attacks against it, state media reported.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a speech to Tehran-based foreign diplomats that Iran has always been ready and will be ready in the future for talks about its nuclear program, but, "assurance should be provided that in case of a resumption of talks, the trend will not lead to war."

Referring to the 12-day Israeli bombardment of Iran's nuclear and military sites, and the U.S. strike on June 22, Araghchi said that if the U.S. and others wish to resume talks with Iran, "first of all, there should be a firm guarantee that such actions will not be repeated. The attack on Iran's nuclear facilities has made it more difficult and complicated to achieve a solution based on negotiations."

Following the strikes, Iran suspended cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog, which led to the departure of inspectors.

Araghchi said that under Iranian law, the country will answer the agency's request for cooperation "case by case," based on Iran's interests. He also said any inspection by the agency should be done based on Iran's "security" concerns as well as the safety of the inspectors. "The risk of proliferation of radioactive ingredients and an explosion of ammunition that remains from the war in the attacked nuclear sites is serious," he said.

He also reiterated Iran's position on the need to continue enriching uranium on its soil. U.S. President Donald Trump has insisted that cannot happen.

Israel claims it acted because Tehran was within reach of a nuclear weapon. U.S. intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency had assessed Iran last had an organized nuclear weapons program in 2003, though Tehran had been enriching uranium up to 60% — a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in an interview published Monday said the U.S. airstrikes so badly damaged his country's nuclear facilities that Iranian authorities still have not been able to access them to survey the destruction.

Ecuador's top drug lord agrees to U.S. extradition after being captured

CBSNewsJuly 12, 2025 at 4:40 PM

Ecuador's most notorious drug lord has agreed to be extradited to the United States to face cocaine and weapons smuggling charges, a court in Quito said Friday.

Adolfo Macias, alias "Fito," was captured in June after escaping from a maximum security prison last year in a jailbreak that sparked a severe wave of gang violence.

Macias, head of the "Los Choneros" gang, is wanted in the United States on multiple charges. A seven-count indictment unsealed in Brooklyn charges Macías and an unidentified co-defendant with international cocaine distribution, conspiracy and weapons counts, including smuggling firearms from the U.S.

The former taxi driver turned crime boss became the prime target of Ecuadoran law enforcement early last year after escaping from prison in the southwestern port of Guayaquil.

He had been serving a 34-year sentence since 2011 for involvement in organized crime, drug trafficking and murder.

Last year, the U.S. classified Los Choneros as one of the most violent gangs and affirmed its connection to powerful Mexican drug cartels who threaten Ecuador and the surrounding region.

Authorities in Ecuador have classified the gang as a terrorist organization. President Daniel Noboa's government at the time released "wanted" posters and offered $1 million for information leading to Macias's recapture.

Macías' escape "triggered widespread riots, bombings, kidnappings, the assassination of a prominent prosecutor, and an armed attack on a TV network during a live broadcast," the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Ecuador said last year.

The Ecuadorian government and drug mafias also declared war on each other, and Noboa gave orders to "neutralize" criminal gangs after gunmen stormed and opened fire in the TV studio and bandits threatened random executions of civilians and security forces.

After months of pursuit, Macias was recaptured last month in a massive military and police operation in which no shots were fired.

He was found hiding in a bunker concealed under floor tiles in a luxury home in the fishing port of Manta, and Noboa declared he would be extradited "the sooner the better."

"More will fall, we will reclaim the country. No truce," Noboa said in an X post at the time. "We have done our part to proceed with Fito's extradition to the United States."

"Fito" ruled notorious prison where he earned law degree

Macias, dressed in an orange prison uniform, took part in a court hearing Friday by video link from a high-security prison in Guayaquil.

In response to a judge's question, he replied, "Yes, I accept (extradition)."

Given his consent, the court said in a statement "the pertinent procedure for the transfer process" will now follow, with Noboa having to sign the official handover papers.

Security forces stand outside the National Court of Justice following a hearing for the extradition of Ecuadorean gang leader Jose Adolfo Macias, known as

This would make Macias the first Ecuadoran extradited by his country since the measure was written into law last year after a referendum in which Noboa sought the approval of measures to boost his war on criminal gangs.

Ecuador, once a peaceful haven between the world's two top cocaine exporters Colombia and Peru, has seen violence erupt in recent years as enemy gangs with ties to Mexican and Colombian cartels vie for control.

Gang wars have largely played out inside the country's prisons, where Macias wielded immense control.

He was the unofficial boss of his Guayaquil prison, where authorities found images glorifying the gangster, weapons and U.S. dollars.

Videos of parties he held in the prison showed the use of fireworks and a mariachi band. In one clip, he appeared waving, laughing and petting a fighting rooster.

Macias earned his law degree behind bars.

By the time he escaped, he was considered a suspect in the assassination of presidential candidate and anti-corruption crusader Fernando Villavicencio in 2023.

Soon after Macias's prison break, Noboa declared Ecuador to be in a state of "internal armed conflict" and ordered the military and tanks into the streets to "neutralize" the gangs.

Los Choneros has ties to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, Colombia's Gulf Clan -- the world's largest cocaine exporter -- and Balkan mafias, according to the Ecuadorian Organized Crime Observatory.

More than 70 percent of all cocaine produced in the world now passes through Ecuador's ports, according to government data.

In 2024, the country seized a record 294 tons of drugs, mainly cocaine.

Unhealthy smoke from Canadian wildfires blankets the Upper Midwest when people want to be outside

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Much of the Upper Midwest on Saturday was dealing with swaths of unhealthy air due to drifting smoke from Canadian wildfires, covering the northern region of the U.S. at a time when people want to be enjoying lakes, trails and the great outdoors.

Most of Minnesota and parts of Montana, North Dakota and Wisconsin were ranked "unhealthy" for air quality on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency map. Part of North Dakota that is home to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and other tourist attractions was ranked "very unhealthy," some of the worst air quality in the nation.

In Minnesota, "If you have a nice pork loin you can hang from a tree, it'll turn into ham," quipped Al Chirpich, owner of the Hideaway Resort near Detroit Lakes, where people come to enjoy tree-lined Island Lake for fishing and other water activities.

Normally there would be boats and jet skis all over, but on Saturday he couldn't see a boat on the lake, where the smoke impaired visibility and curtailed his camper business. None of his 18 RV sites was occupied. His seven rental cabins drew a handful of customers.

"I suspect when the weather clears, we'll be swamped again. Fourth of July, I had probably 20 boats here lined up at my docks, and today my boat is the only one," Chirpich said.

The conditions started Friday, dragging smoke from the Canadian wildfires down to the surface, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Jennifer Ritterling, in Grand Forks. Periods of bad air quality are expected to last through the weekend in the region, she said.

Limiting time outdoors, keeping windows closed and running air purifiers are good ideas for people with lung conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and even healthy people, Ritterling said.

"Our summers up here are fairly short and so everyone wants to get out and enjoy them, and it's a little frustrating when there's this smoke in the air," she said.

All of Manitoba is under a state of emergency due to the wildfires, which have led to 12,600 people evacuating their homes in the province. The fires in Manitoba have burned over 3,861 square miles (10,000 square kilometers), the most land burned in 30 years of electronic recordkeeping, the news outlet reported. Under 1,000 people have evacuated their homes in Saskatchewan, where wildfires also continue to burn.

In Arizona, the North Rim in Grand Canyon National Park is still closed due to a 2.3 square-mile (6.1 square-kilometer) wildfire and another fire nearby on Bureau of Land Management land that has burned nearly 17 square miles (44 square kilometers).

In Colorado, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park remains closed due to a 4.4 square mile (11.3 square kilometer) wildfire burning on the South Rim of the park, known for its dramatic, steep cliffs. Crews have been fighting the fire on multiple sides to stop it from spreading.

The fires in and near both national parks led to evacuations of hundreds of people.

Chirpich, the Minnesota resort owner, said he has plans to go to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Thursday and is "a bit pensive about how that's going to be there."

"I'm going to leave one smokehouse for another, I guess," he said.

Tour de France: Jonathan Milan wins Stage 8 in a sprint finish

1 / 5Cycling Tour de FranceItaly's Jonathan Milan, wearing the best sprinter's green jersey, celebrates as he crosses the finish line to win the eighth stage of the Tour de France cycling race over 171.4 kilometers (106.5 miles) with start in Saint-Meen-le-Grand and finish in Laval Espace Mayenne, France, Saturday, July 12, 2025. (AP Photo/Mosa'ab Elshamy)

LAVAL, France (AP) — Italian rider Jonathan Milan timed his attack perfectly to win the eighth stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish on Saturday.

Milan overtook Australian Kaden Groves on his left and held off Belgian rider Wout van Aert to beat him by about half a bike length. Milan won Olympic gold with Italy in team pursuit at the 2021 Tokyo Games and this was his first Tour stage win to go with four on the Giro d'Italia.

Defending champion Tadej Pogačar kept the yellow jersey after finishing in the main pack.

After Friday's tough grind, the peloton set off at a slower pace on a sun-baked Stage 8, starting from the Brittany commune of Saint-Méen-le-Grand and taking riders 171 kilometers (106 miles) to Laval in western France.

The main teams had no will to set a high pace, so the peloton trundled along through country roads until two riders —- French teammates Mathieu Burgaudeau and Matteo Vercher — broke away with about 80 kilometers left.

The peloton did not respond, continuing to roll at a lethargic pace for a long time with no team deciding to lead the chase.

"It was a much more relaxing stage than the previous ones," Pogačar said. "It has been a good day out in order to recover from the many efforts we have already done."

Pogačar even had time to check how his girlfriend Urška Žigart was doing on the women's Giro. She finished seventh on Stage 7.

"I'm always nervous on the bike when she is racing, and it's great to hear about her," he said. "When she does well, I feel super happy."

The pack was taking it a bit too easy in his race, though.

When sprinters realized they were in danger of missing out on a stage win, the peloton's speed had to increase eventually, and the two riders were finally caught with nine kilometers left.

After a sinewy route near the finish, Stage 2 winner Mathieu van der Poel accelerated to put his Alpecin–Deceuninck teammate Groves into a good position, but they attacked a little too soon.

Milan anticipated this, made his own move and withstood Van Aert's late attack behind him. The trio clocked 3 hours, 50 minutes.

"It was a tough finale. I was in the front positions and I waited for the right moment to launch my sprint," Milan said. "I gave it all and it worked out."

In the overall standings, double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel remained 54 seconds behind Pogačar in second place. Frenchman Kévin Vauquelin was third at 1 minutes, 11 seconds, and two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard sat 1:17 behind in fourth spot.

Sunday is for sprinters

Stage 9 of the three-week race heads into central France on a 158-kilometer flat stage for sprinters finishing in Châteauroux.
