<p>(Reuters) -A preliminary report by Indian aviation accident investigators said on Saturday the fatal Air India crash that killed 260 people in Ahmedabad last month showed the plane engines fuel cutoff switches shifting from cutoff to run within seconds of each other.</p>

<p>"At this stage of investigation, there are no recommended actions to Boeing 787-8 and/or GE GEnx-1B engine operators and manufacturers" India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said.</p>

<p>The agency, an office under India's civil aviation ministry, is leading the probe into the world's deadliest aviation accident in a decade.</p>

<p>Breakfast cereal could use a lucky charm.</p>

<p>U.S. sales of the colorfully packaged morning staple have been in a decades-long decline, a trend back in the spotlight with news that Italian confectioner Ferrero Group plans to purchase the American company that makes Kellogg's Corn Flakes, Froot Loops, Rice Krispies and other familiar brands.</p>

<p>Except for a brief period during the coronavirus pandemic, when many workers were home and had time to sit down with a bowl of cereal and milk, sales of cold cereal have steadily fallen for at least 25 years, experts say.</p>

<p>In the 52 weeks ending July 3, 2021, Americans bought nearly 2.5 billion boxes of cereal, according to market research company Nielsen IQ. In the same period this year, the number was down more than 13% to 2.1 billion.</p>

<p>Cereal has been struggling for multiple reasons. The rise of more portable options like Nutri-Grain bars and Clif Bars – which both went on sale in the early 1990s – made it easier for consumers to grab breakfast on the go.</p>

<p>Concerns about food processing and sugar intake have also dimmed some consumers' enthusiasm for cereals. One cup of Lucky Charms contains 24% of a consumer's daily recommended intake of sugar, for example.</p>

<p>"Cereal finds it really hard to get out from underneath that," said Tom Rees, global insight manager for staple foods at the consulting company Euromonitor. "It can't escape the fact that it doesn't look like a natural food. You have to create it and form it."</p>

<p>Rees noted that for decades, cereal manufacturers focused on adding vitamins and minerals to build cereal's health credentials. But consumers now are looking for simplified ingredient lists.</p>

<p>Artificial dyes — like the petroleum-based colors that brighten Froot Loops — have also come under fire. Last fall, dozens of people rallied outside WK Kellogg's Battle Creek, Michigan, headquarters demanding that it remove artificial dyes from its cereals. Kellogg and General Mills — another major U.S. cereal maker — have since pledged to phase out artificial dyes.</p>

<p>Add to that, consumers are expanding their idea of what breakfast can be. Yogurt and shakes have replaced the traditional bacon and eggs. Kenton Barello, a vice president at the market research firm YouGov, said his polling shows that Generation Z consumers, who were born between 1997 and 2007, eat more vegetables for breakfast than other generations.</p>

<p>Barello said YouGov's polling also shows that members of Gen Z are less likely to eat breakfast but still buy ready-to-eat cereal, suggesting they're eating it as a snack or for other meals.</p>

<p>"With younger generations, there are differences in their relationship with food and these eating moments," Barello said. "They are going about breakfast in a different way than Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers."</p>

<p>Cereal's struggles are part of what led to the breakup of the Kellogg Company. In 2023, the century-old company that put Battle Creek, Michigan, on the map split into two companies. Kellanova took popular snack brands like Cheez-Its, Pringles and Pop-Tarts as well as international cereals, and WK Kellogg made cereals for the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.</p>

<p>In 2024, M&M's maker Mars Inc. announced a plan to buy Kellanova for more than $30 billion. That plan has cleared U.S. regulators but is still awaiting regulatory approval in Europe. WK Kellogg was left to try to rejuvenate the cereal business.</p>

<p>The sale of WK Kellogg to Ferrero doesn't mean supermarket cereal aisles are at risk of extinction. Packaged food companies have options for turning around their soggy cereal sales, Rees said. He thinks Kellogg's Mashups line, which mixed brands like Frosted Flakes and Froot Loops into one box, appeal to younger consumers, who tend to like interesting flavor combinations.</p>

<p>The market may also have a fragmented future, according to Rees. Companies may have to accept that younger buyers want a sweet-and-spicy cereal while older buyers might want a Keto-friendly option.</p>

<p>"The future might be realizing that the era of 'This brand will serve everybody' isn't going to happen," Rees said.</p>

<p>Julia Mills, a food analyst with the consulting company Mintel, thinks the shrinking population of children in the U.S. gives cereal makers the opportunity to shift to more sophisticated flavors and packaging. Cereal could be positioned as a fancy topping for yogurt, for example, or a fiber-rich food that can improve gut health.</p>

<p>Some niche cereal brands, like high-fiber Poop Like a Champion cereal and high-protein, zero-sugar Magic Spoon, are already doing that. But legacy brands say they shouldn't be counted out.</p>

<p>Jeffrey Harmening, the chairman and chief executive officer of Cheerios maker General Mills, said his company considered trying to acquire Magic Spoon. Instead, it made high-protein versions of Cheerios, which now outsells Magic Spoon.</p>

<p>"The key to longer term is, honestly, is giving consumers more of what they want," Harmening said during a conference call with investors in March.</p>

<p>ATLANTA (AP) — A prominent Georgia Republican accused of running a $140 million Ponzi scheme publicly apologized on Friday as a federal judge ordered his assets frozen and appointed a receiver to try to recover cash for investors.</p>

<p>Brant Frost IV said in a statement issued through his lawyers that he "would like to apologize personally to those I have harmed, but I am under restrictions which prevent me from doing so."</p>

<p>"I take full responsibility for my actions and am resolved to spend the rest of my life trying to repay as much as I can to the many people I misled and let down," Frost said in the statement. "I will be cooperating with the receiver and federal authorities and ask that everyone allow the receiver time to sort things out and do his best to repair the damage I created."</p>

<p>The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said in a civil lawsuit filed Thursday that First Liberty Building and Loan, controlled by Frost, lied to investors about its business of making high-interest loans to companies. Instead, investigators said that its loans mostly went sour and that it then raised more money to repay earlier investors, while Frost skimmed millions for himself and his family.</p>

<p>The firm's collapse rocked the religious and political networks that fed cash to the business, based in suburban Newnan, southwest of Atlanta. It also could have ramifications in state Republican politics, cutting off funding to the far-right candidates that Frost and his family have favored. Investigators said Frost spent $570,000 from investor funds on political contributions.</p>

<p>U.S. District Judge Michael Brown on Friday froze Frost's personal and corporate assets, banned him from the securities business, and ordered him to pay back ill-gotten gains with interest and fines. The SEC requested the order and Frost agreed to it without admitting or denying any factual allegations.</p>

<p>The judge also appointed financial consultant S. Gregory Hays as receiver. He will take control of assets, examine the books and try to claw back money. Everyone else is barred, for now, from suing Frost or First Liberty.</p>

<p>The SEC said the business had only $2.67 million in cash as of May 30. With 300 investors out $140 million, that means the average investor put in nearly $500,000.</p>

<p>Frost is alleged to have taken $17 million for himself, his family and affiliated companies, spending $573,000 on political donations to Republicans, $160,000 on jewelry, $20,800 on a Patek Philippe watch and $335,000 to buy gold coins. Frost is also accused of spending $320,000 to rent a vacation home over multiple years in Kennebunkport, Maine, the town where the family of late president George H. W. Bush spent summers.</p>

<p>The SEC said in court papers that Frost kept writing checks and soliciting new investors even after he made "misrepresentations" when investigators first met with Frost on May 15. Court papers included a June 16 email asking investors to put between $100,000 and $500,000 into a loan to First Liberty itself, claiming the company was developing an AI software system to help banks and credit unions complete loan applications quickly. The company went out of business 11 days later on June 27.</p>

<p>Federal prosecutors have declined to say whether they will seek criminal charges. Sometimes, both an SEC civil case and a federal criminal case are filed over investment frauds. The business is also being investigated by the Georgia secretary of state for possible violations of securities law.</p>

<p>First Liberty said it made loans to companies that needed cash while they waited for more conventional loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. It charged high rates of interest — 18% on most loans, prosecutors said. First Liberty promised investors equally high rates of return — 8% to 16%. The company advertised heavily to find new investors over the past year, branching out from the original "family and friends" approach.</p>

<p>Frost has been an important player in Georgia politics since 1988, when he coordinated televangelist Pat Robertson's Republican presidential bid in the state. His son, Brant Frost V, is chairman of the Coweta County Republican Party and former second vice-chair of the state Republican Party. Daughter Katie Frost is the Republican chairman of the 3rd Congressional District, which includes Coweta County and other areas southwest of Atlanta.</p>

<p>WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided federal appeals court on Friday threw out an agreement that would have allowed accused Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to plead guilty in a deal sparing him the risk of execution for al-Qaida's 2001 attacks.</p>

<p>The decision by a panel of the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., undoes an attempt to wrap up more than two decades of military prosecution beset by legal and logistical troubles. It signals there will be no quick end to the long struggle by the U.S. military and successive administrations to bring to justice the man charged with planning one of the deadliest attacks ever on the United States.</p>

<p>The deal, negotiated over two years and approved by military prosecutors and the Pentagon's senior official for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a year ago, stipulated life sentences without parole for Mohammed and two co-defendants.</p>

<p>Mohammed is accused of developing and directing the plot to crash hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Another of the hijacked planes flew into a field in Pennsylvania.</p>

<p>Relatives of the Sept. 11 victims were split on the plea deal. Some objected to it, saying a trial was the best path to justice and to gaining more information about the attacks, while others saw it as the best hope for bringing the painful case to a conclusion and getting some answers from the defendants.</p>

<p>The plea deal would have obligated the men to answer any lingering questions that families of the victims have about the attacks.</p>

<p>But then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin repudiated the deal, saying a decision on the death penalty in an attack as grave as Sept. 11 should only be made by the defense secretary.</p>

<p>Attorneys for the defendants had argued that the agreement was already legally in effect and that Austin, who served under President Joe Biden, acted too late to try to throw it out. A military judge at Guantanamo and a military appeals panel agreed with the defense lawyers.</p>

<p>But, by a 2-1 vote, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit found Austin acted within his authority and faulted the military judge's ruling.</p>

<p>The panel had previously put the agreement on hold while it considered the appeal, first filed by the Biden administration and then continued under President Donald Trump.</p>

<p>"Having properly assumed the convening authority, the Secretary determined that the 'families and the American public deserve the opportunity to see military commission trials carried out.' The Secretary acted within the bounds of his legal authority, and we decline to second-guess his judgment," judges Patricia Millett and Neomi Rao wrote.</p>

<p>Millett was an appointee of President Barack Obama while Rao was appointed by Trump.</p>

<p>In a dissent, Judge Robert Wilkins, an Obama appointee, wrote, "The government has not come within a country mile of proving clearly and indisputably that the Military Judge erred."</p>

<p>Brett Eagleson, who was among the family members who objected to the deal, called Friday's appellate ruling "a good win, for now."</p>

<p>"A plea deal allows this to be tucked away into a nice, pretty package, wrapped into a bow and put on a shelf and forgotten about," said Eagleson, who was 15 when his father, shopping center executive John Bruce Eagleson, was killed in the attacks.</p>

<p>Brett Eagleson was unmoved by the deal's provisions for the defendants to answer Sept. 11 families' questions; he wonders how truthful the men would be. In his view, "the only valid way to get answers and seek the truth is through a trial" and pretrial fact-finding.</p>

<p>Elizabeth Miller, who was 6 when the attacks killed her father, firefighter Douglas Miller, was among those who supported the deal.</p>

<p>"Of course, growing up, a trial would have been great initially," she said. But "we're in 2025, and we're still at the pretrial stage."</p>

<p>"I just really don't think a trial is possible," said Miller, who also favored the deal because of her opposition to the death penalty in general.</p>

<p>A person in northern Arizona has died from a case of pneumonic plague, local health officials said.</p>

<p>The unidentified patient, from Coconino County, showed up to the Flagstaff Medical Center Emergency Department and died there the same day, Northern Arizona Healthcare said in a statement. It is unclear when the death occurred.</p>

<p>The hospital noted that "appropriate initial management" and "attempts to provide life-saving resuscitation" was performed, but "the patient did not recover."</p>

<p>Rapid diagnostic testing led to a presumptive diagnosis of Yersinia pestis.</p>

<p>Coconino County Health and Human Services said testing results confirmed Friday that the patient died from pneumonic plague, described as "a severe lung infection caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium."</p>

<p>This marked the first recorded death from pneumonic plague in the county since 2007, when an individual had an interaction with a dead animal infected with the disease, according to county officials.</p>

<p>The most common forms of plague are bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemic. Pneumonic plague "develops when bacteria spread to the lungs of a patient with untreated bubonic or septicemic plague, or when a person inhales infectious droplets coughed out by another person or animal with pneumonic plague," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.</p>

<p>Bubonic plague — known for killing millions in Europe in the Middle Ages — is now rare but some cases are reported in the rural western U.S. every year, as well as in certain regions of Africa and Asia, according to the CDC. The disease is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and affects people and other mammals.</p>

<p>Symptoms usually appear within two to six days of infection and include fever and swollen painful lymph nodes, most commonly found in the armpit, groin and neck.</p>

<p>An average of seven human plague cases are reported each year in the U.S., but those cases aren't always fatal, according to data from the CDC from 2000 to 2023.</p>

<p>Humans are usually infected through a bite of an infected rodent flea or by handling an animal carrying the disease, according to the CDC. It can be easily cured if given antibiotics early.</p>

<p>The hospital is working with the Coconino County Health and Human Services Department and the Arizona Department of Health Services to investigate the case.</p>

<p>"NAH would like to remind anyone who suspects they are ill with a contagious disease to contact their health care provider. If their illness is severe, they should go to the Emergency Department and immediately ask for a mask to help prevent the spread of disease while they access timely and important care," the hospital said.</p>

<p>Earlier in the week, the Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS) reported a prairie dog die-off in the Townsend Winona area, northeast of Flagstaff — which officials said "can be an indicator of plague." The department noted the recent death is not related to the prairie dog die-off.</p>

<p>The impacted area was on private land and the CCHHS was working with the property owner to collect fleas for testing. Burrows will also be treated to reduce flea activity and the area will be monitored.</p>

<p>"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased," said Coconino County Board of Supervisors Chair Patrice Horstman. "We are keeping them in our thoughts during this difficult time. Out of respect for the family, no additional information about the death will be released."</p>

<p>In recent years, the only certainty in the housing market is uncertainty. From the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic to unprecedented economic shifts, today's market has seen plenty of changes. Early in the pandemic, for instance, many buyers sought to take advantage of low mortgage rates, leading to a seller's market.</p>

<p>Today, sellers still have a great deal of leverage in many places thanks to relatively low inventory. However, buyers have started to reclaim the advantage in a number of places. Cities across the American Sun Belt have started to see listings lingering on the market far longer than they did two or three years ago. Below, PropertyReach.com explores why that is and where it's happening the most.</p>

<p>Setting the Scene: Why Houses Are On the Market Longer</p>

<p>We can thank the COVID-19 pandemic for many of the realities we see shaping the real estate market today. Hot on the heels of the buying craze of 2021 and 2022 was a dramatic increase in listing prices. Sellers sought to take advantage of the sky-high demand, while buyers enjoyed a host of options to choose from.</p>

<p>As of 2025, things look a bit different. While the demand for homes has dwindled, supply has not. What's more, many sellers haven't adjusted their expectations or home prices to match, with many asking for listing prices that reflect those they saw during the pandemic.</p>

<p>As home prices grow–and mortgage rates inflate–many homes sit on the market for weeks and months at a time. Real estate listing data suggests that the median time homes spend on the market may be as high as 70 days, which is up from an estimated 30 days in 2022.</p>

<p>Major U.S. Cities Seeing Longer Time-to-Sell Periods</p>

<p>While this trend may be true nationwide, it's affecting some cities and regions more than others.</p>

<p>Most of the U.S. cities with long-lasting listings are in the Sun Belt, including Texas and Florida. That stands in contrast to the early days of COVID-19, when many younger families sought fairer climates to enjoy work-from-home arrangements.</p>

<p>This analysis uses public real estate data from ListWithClever and recent estimates from St. Louis FED to examine where homes are taking the longest to sell as of 2025. Median home prices, supply, days-on-market, and local income data were considered to evaluate buyer leverage in select cities.</p>

<p>1. Miami, FL</p>

<p>The 305 area code is no longer the red-hot market it used to be a few years ago. The median time for Miami houses on the market in 2024 was 69 days, which is longer than all other major U.S. cities. The median home sales price in Miami is substantially above the national median, as many sellers are hoping to fetch high prices.</p>

<p>2. Austin, TX</p>

<p>Right behind Miami is Austin, Texas, a storied destination for arts and music lovers. After decades of robust population growth, home sales in Austin slowed considerably in 2024, and listings sat on the market for a median period of 66 days. The astonishing number of homes developers built during the population boom has provided ample supply for buyers looking to move to the Lone Star State, but many are still wary about pulling the trigger.</p>

<p>3. New York, NY</p>

<p>One of the few northeastern cities to make "longest-to-sell" lists, New York still boasts some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Accordingly, buyers are thinking very carefully before making such expensive purchases, especially with mortgage rates hovering near seven percent.</p>

<p>4. Jacksonville, FL</p>

<p>Florida's largest city by population is also not seeing the turnover it experienced in 2021 and 2022. Home listings in Jacksonville last for a median period of 62 days, which is just behind Miami and Austin, Texas.</p>

<p>5. San Antonio, TX</p>

<p>The nation's seventh-largest city by population has surprisingly affordable homes. The median sales price of a San Antonio home in 2024 was just $308,000—far lower than the national median of $470,000. The median household income for a San Antonio family in 2023 was lower than that of all but two other cities (Pittsburgh and Birmingham, Alabama) on the list of the top 10 slowest-selling U.S. cities for homes.</p>

<p>6. Pittsburgh, PA</p>

<p>Although Pittsburgh has had a relatively soft landing after the decline of the city's once-ubiquitous steel industry, home sales declined from 2023 to 2024. The median sales price in Pittsburgh was the lowest among the top 10 slowest-selling U.S. cities, and median household income largely keeps pace. However, the rising inventory and stubbornly high mortgage rates have made Pittsburgh a buyer's market.</p>

<p>7. Birmingham, AL</p>

<p>Home sellers in Birmingham, the Pittsburgh of the South, can expect listings to stay on the market for a long time—around 57 days. Homes are relatively affordable, with the median sales price hovering around $286,000. The boundary for many potential buyers, however, is the city's low median household income, which is just short of $70,000.</p>

<p>Final Thoughts: Buyers Have More Leverage in Many U.S. Cities</p>

<p>Sellers still have the upper hand in places like New England and the Midwest, but buyers are starting to see a shift in Florida, Texas, and a few large cities in the Northeast. Families and investors seeking nice neighborhoods can benefit from doing their due diligence (and research) in areas like these. Using resources like real estate databases and property record lookup tools can help you zoom in on great deals in markets where your money goes the furthest.</p>
