• Fantasy Baseball 2-Start Pitcher Rankings: This Marlin 'has a higher ceiling than any other starter available'

Fred ZinkieJuly 7, 2025 at 10:16 PM

This is a tough week to stream starters for fantasy baseball. There are just a couple pitchers on this list who I would be excited to start, with a few others who qualify as desperation plays in 12-team leagues.

[Smarter waivers, better trades, optimized lineups — Yahoo Fantasy Plus unlocks it all]

Unfortunately, the list of one-start streamers isn't any better. Things are a little more appealing on the hitting side, as the Reds and Red Sox can both provide multiple options.

Two-Start Pitchers (listed in order of preference)Nick Martinez, Reds, 28% (vs. MIA, vs. COL)

Although Martinez has been inconsistent, he has a 3.97 ERA and 1.09 WHIP since the beginning of May. He will start off the week against a Marlins team that has been average against righties, before wrapping things up with an appealing home start against a Rockies offense that ranks 29th in runs scored on the road. Having RP eligibility makes Martinez even more appealing in head-to-head leagues.

Eury Pérez, Marlins, 38% (@CIN, @BAL)

After failing to throw five innings in each of his initial four starts, Pérez enjoyed his most dominant outing since returning from Tommy John surgery when he struck out seven Twins across six shutout innings of one-hit ball on July 3. He will likely be inconsistent this summer, but Pérez is averaging 98.1 mph on his fastball and has a higher ceiling than any other starter who is available in most Yahoo leagues. His matchups aren't easy this week, but they also aren't scary enough to keep him on waivers.

José Soriano, Angels, 42% (vs. TEX, vs. ARI)

Soriano leads all qualified pitchers in ground ball rate, and has recently had some dominant starts when he has combined all of those grounders with plenty of strikeouts. But Soriano continues to walk too many batters, which makes him susceptible to awful starts when plenty of ground balls slip through the infield. Soriano has one favorable matchup (Rangers) and a difficult one (D-backs), and is more appealing in points leagues, where he can't do damage in the WHIP category.

Noah Cameron, Royals, 44% (vs. PIT, vs. NYM)

After allowing just three earned runs in his initial five starts, Cameron has been less consistent en route to logging a 4.74 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over his past five outings. Still, the rookie produced a solid 24:9 K:BB ratio in those five starts, and his two worst appearances came against offenses that lead their respective leagues in runs scored (Yankees, Dodgers). Cameron doesn't go deep enough into games to have a high ceiling, but should be serviceable against an average lineup (Mets, 13th in runs scored) and a bad one (Royals, 30th in runs scored).

Jansen Junk, Marlins, 6% (@ CIN, @BAL)

The ERA estimators are all over the map on Junk, who has an eye-popping 33:2 K:BB ratio and has allowed just one homer in 37.1 innings. It's easy to look at his .339 BABIP and 66.5% strand rate and assume that he has been unlucky, but a deeper dive shows that living in the strike zone has allowed hitters to tee off on the right-hander (92.5 mph average exit velocity, 25.4% line drive rate). We are dealing with small sample sizes when assessing Junk, and he has two opponents who are above average in runs scored since June 1. He's a boom-or-bust option.

Andre Pallante, Cardinals, 11% (vs. WSH, vs. ATL)

Pallante has allowed just two runs over 18 innings in his past three starts. Still, that success has come with an unimpressive 9:5 K:BB ratio, and the 26-year-old's continued inability to punch out batters (6.0 K/9 rate) gives him one of the lowest ceilings of any starter. His greatest appeal is to Roto managers who are hoping to chase wins without destroying their ratios.

Andrew Heaney, Pirates, 21% (@ KC, @ MIN)

Heaney has struggled on the road (5.79 ERA), which is part of the equation for both of his starts this week. Fortunately, the Royals rank last in runs scored, and the Twins are an average matchup. Heaney's ERA has risen every month this year, which makes him a risky option this week.

Simeon Woods Richardson, Twins, 7% (vs. CHC, vs. PIT)

After nearly a month in the Minors, Woods Richardson rejoined the rotation on June 10. Although his initial start went poorly, over his past four outings the righty has produced a 1.71 ERA and 0.76 WHIP. Still, his 16:7 K:BB ratio in those four starts is an unimpressive mark, and he has benefited tremendously from a .143 BABIP. Woods Richardson has polarizing matchups this week, as the Cubs rank 2nd in runs scored and the Pirates place 29th. I would leave him on waivers in 12-team leagues.

Brady Singer, Reds, 49% (vs. MIA, vs. COL)

Thanks to his inability to control the strike zone (80:38 K:BB ratio), Singer regularly struggles to keep the bases clean (1.34 WHIP) and limit scoring (4.36 ERA). Like his teammate Martinez, Singer is more appealing than usual this week thanks to a two-start schedule that includes favorable matchups. But there is a good chance that the right-hander is not even up to such a manageable task.

Jeffrey Springs, Athletics, 30% (vs. ATL, vs. TOR)

Although still homer prone, Springs deserves credit for posting a 2.97 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 30:8 K:BB ratio since the beginning of June. The lefty is one of many Athletics pitchers who have struggled at home this year (4.73 ERA), which is where both of his starts will occur this week. The Braves have had one of the worst offenses in the past month, while the Blue Jays have had one of the best and are also the toughest team in baseball to strike out. I can't recommend Springs at this venue.

One-Start Streamers

In order, here are the best streamers for the week, with their start date and Yahoo roster rate in brackets.

Chase Burns vs. COL (Friday, 51%)

Ryne Nelson @ LAA (Friday, 43%)

Eric Lauer @ CWS (Wednesday, 29%)

Charlie Morton vs. NYM (Thursday, 22%)

Dean Kremer vs. MIA (Friday, 25%)

Cade Horton @ MIN (Wednesday, 15%)

Gavin Williams @ CWS (Friday, 44%)

Trevor Rogers vs. MIA (Saturday, 31%)

Patrick Corbin @ LAA (Thursday, 10%)

Cam Schlittler vs. SEA (Wednesday, 7%)

Michael Lorenzen vs. NYM (Saturday, 12%)

Bailey Falter @ KC (Wednesday, 13%)

Favorable Monday-Thursday hitting matchupsReds vs. Marlins

Although Miami has made some pitching improvements of late, their staff should still give up some runs when they spend four days at Great American Ball Park. Cleanup hitter Austin Hays (16%) is the top player to add, while Noelvi Marte (23%) recently returned from the injured list and has upside.

Red Sox vs. Rockies, Rays

Facing the Rockies pitching staff is usually a recipe for success, and the Red Sox will open their series against the Rays by taking on Taj Bradley (4.79 ERA). With two lefties and a pair of right-handers on the docket, finding Boston hitters who remain in the lineup for all matchups is important. Roman Anthony (49%) is the top option to add, while Carlos Narvaez (21%) is a good catching streamer this week.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian's transport minister was found dead Monday, hours after being dismissed by President Vladimir Putin, in what officials called an apparent suicide.

Roman Starovoyt, who served as Russia's transport minister since May 2024, was fired in a presidential decree earlier in the day.

Hours later, the body of Starovoyt, 53, was found in his car with a gunshot wound, according to Russia's Investigative Committee, the top criminal investigation agency.

A criminal probe has been launched into Starovoyt's death and investigators see suicide as the most likely cause, according to committee's spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko.

Russian media have reported that Starovoyt's dismissal could have been linked to an investigation into the embezzlement of state funds allocated for building fortifications in the Kursk region where he served as governor before being appointed transportation minister.

The alleged embezzlement has been named as one of the reasons behind deficiencies in Russia's defensive lines that failed to stem a Ukrainian incursion in the region that was launched in August 2024.

Starovoyt's successor as Kursk governor, Alexei Smirnov, stepped down in December and was arrested on embezzlement charges in April. Some Russian media have alleged that Starovoyt also could have faced charges as part of the investigation.

Starovoyt's dismissal also followed a weekend of travel chaos as Russian airports were forced to ground hundreds of flights due to Ukrainian drone attacks.

An official order releasing Starovoyt from his post was published on the Kremlin's website Monday morning. It did not give a reason for his dismissal from the post, which Starovoyt has held since May 2024.

Shortly before the news about Starovoyt's death broke, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on the reasons behind his dismissal.

Peskov praised Starovoyt's replacement, Andrei Nikitin, who had been appointed deputy transport minister five months ago.

A reignited Trump-Musk feud burns Tesla investors, shares of EV company tumble 8%

FILE - Elon Musk speaks during a cabinet meeting at the White House, April 30, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

Shares of Tesla tumbled 8% at the opening bell Monday as the feud between CEO Elon Musk and Trump reignited over the weekend.

Musk, once a top donor and ally of Trump, announced that he was forming a third political party in protest over the Republican spending bill that passed late last week. Elon Musk has been highly critical of the bill, which he said would kill jobs and bog down burgeoning industries.

In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said that the billionaire owner of SpaceX, Tesla and X had gone "off the rails" in recent weeks.

Investors fear that Musk's companies, which receive significant subsidies from the federal government, could suffer further if his feud with Trump continues to fester.

"With the autonomous future ahead and the AI Revolution in full force Musk/Tesla do not need to keep poking the bear as Trump can create more hurdles for Musk/Tesla/SpaceX over the coming years if this political battle gets nastier heading into mid-terms in 2026," Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives wrote in a note to clients late Sunday.

Tesla shares have been extremely volatile since Musk went all-in for Trump in the run-up to last year's election with the company facing a growing backlash as a result of Musk's embrace of right-wing politics and his role in the Trump administration.

Shares have plunged in Europe and the U.S.. Industry analysts believe a large part of that slump is being driven by Musk's affiliation with Trump and far-right parties like Germany AfD. But Tesla is facing rising competition globally, particularly in China.

Since hitting an all-time high of $479.76 on Dec. 17, Tesla shares have lost about 40% of their value. Tesla shares are down about $26 each since Thursday's close, to $289.75.

Trump's Tariff Threat to BRICS Over 'Anti-American' Concern

-

 • Trump's Tariff Threat to BRICS Over 'Anti-American' Concern

Callum SutherlandJuly 7, 2025 at 8:42 PM

U.S. President Donald Trump appears in the briefing room of the White House on June 27, 2025, in Washington, D.C. Credit - Joe Raedle—Getty Images

President Donald Trump has threatened additional tariffs on any country that supports the "anti-American" policies of the BRICS group, a political and diplomatic coordination forum consisting of 11 countries.

"Any country aligning themselves with the anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an additional 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy," Trump said via Truth Social on Sunday night.

Trump did not explicitly specify what constitutes "anti-American" policies in this instance, but he has previously warned the group not to create a new BRICS currency or "back any other currency to replace the mighty U.S. dollar."

The threat came after the U.S. President said that the long-awaited tariff deals and letters discussing those moves with other countries will be announced from 12pm ET on Monday, signalling movement on the trading front as the July 9 deadline for the pause on Trump's tariffs approaches.

Thus far, Trump has only announced deals with three countries: the United Kingdom, China, and Vietnam.

BRICS started its two-day 2025 summit in Brazil on Sunday. Leaders from attending countries signed a joint declaration titled "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance."

Unsurprisingly, come Monday, the threat of additional U.S. tariffs loomed over the intergovernmental organization's proceedings.

Read More: The U.S. Has a Long History of Tariffs. Here's How Trump's Compare

Here's what you in light of Trump's remarks.

What is BRICS?

BRICS—which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—was founded in 2001, with the purpose of serving as a forum for emerging economies and less developed countries to cooperate on key issues such as trade, security, and diplomacy.

Brazil, Russia, India, and China were original members, with South Africa invited to join in 2010. Since then, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia have been welcomed aboard, bringing the total to 11 countries.

The group also established a relationship with strategic partner countries at last year's summit, aligning itself with Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Nigeria. Vietnam was formerly announced as the 10th partner country in June.

BRICS is widely seen as a challenge to the unipolar global power dynamic, in which the United States is regarded as the lead superpower. Instead, BRICS members have pushed a multipolar power setting, in which various countries lead global cooperation efforts.

But some experts argue that the U.S. position as the standout superpower has come to an end and that the transition into a multipolar power is already underway.

BRICS says it is responsible for 24% of the world's commercial exchanges and represents 39% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

On the opening day of this year's summit, a joint declaration from BRICs leaders called out the "indiscriminate rising of tariffs," without directly referencing the U.S. or Trump.

"We voice serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with WTO [World Trade Organization] rules," claimed the declaration.

BRICs nations also doubled down on how they want to shape future global power and trade.

"We want to emphasize the importance of the global south as a driver of positive change, especially amid significant international challenges—including escalating geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown, accelerated technological transformation, protectionist measures. and migration challenges," the group said.

Read More: Key Takeaways From the 2025 NATO Summit

How have BRICS leaders responded to Trump's tariffs threat?

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Monday denied that BRICS works to undermine other countries.

Peskov said the Kremlin was aware of Trump's latest tariff threat regarding "anti-American policies."

"We have indeed seen such statements by President Trump, but it is very important to note here that the uniqueness of a group like BRICS is that it is a group of countries that share common approaches and a common world view on how to cooperate based on their own interests," said Peskov. "And this cooperation within BRICS has never been, and will never be, directed against any third countries."

China's foreign ministry also reacted, saying it opposes tariffs being used as a tool in an effort to coerce others. The use of tariffs serves no one, spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters, according to Reuters.

South Africa's trade ministry spokesperson Kaamil Alli is quoted as telling Reuters: "We still await formal communication from the U.S. in respect our trade deal, but our conversations remain constructive and fruitful. As we have communicated previously, we are not anti-American."

Indonesia's coordinating minister of economic affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, is set to travel to the U.S. on Monday after the BRICS summit concludes in Brazil. Tariffs will almost certainly be at the forefront of discussions once they land.

Trump has previously threatened BRICS with tariffs. In November, after winning the presidential election, he threatened a 100% tariff on BRICS nations should they "move away" from the U.S. dollar.

"The idea that the BRICS countries are trying to move away from the dollar while we stand by and watch is over," Trump warned. "We require a commitment from these countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency, nor back any other currency to replace the mighty U.S. dollar, or they will face 100% tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. economy."
