Judge allows the National Science Foundation to withhold hundreds of millions of research dollars

NEW YORK (AP) — The National Science Foundation can continue to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars from researchers in several states until litigation aimed at restoring it plays out, a federal court ruled Friday.

U.S. District Judge John Cronan in New York declined to force the NSF to restart payments immediately, while the case is still being decided, as requested by the sixteen Democrat-led states who brought the suit, including New York, Hawaii, California, Colorado and Connecticut.

In his ruling, Cronan said he would not grant the preliminary injunction in part because it may be that another court, the Court of Federal Claims, has jurisdiction over what is essentially a case about money. He also said the states failed to show that NSF's actions were counter to the agency's mandate.

The lawsuit filed in May alleges that the National Science Foundation's new grant-funding priorities as well as a cap on what's known as indirect research expenses "violate the law and jeopardize America's longstanding global leadership in STEM."

Another district court had already blocked the the cap on indirect costs — administrative expenses that allow research to get done like paying support staff and maintaining equipment. This injunction had been requested to restore funding to the grants that were cut.

In April, the NSF announced a new set of priorities and began axing hundreds of grants for research focused on things like misinformation and diversity, equity and inclusion. Researchers who lost funding also were studying artificial intelligence, post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans, STEM education for K-12 students and more.

Researchers were not given a specific explanation for why their grants were canceled, attorney Colleen Faherty, representing the state of New York, said during last month's hearing. Instead, they received boilerplate language stating that their work "no longer effectuates the program goals or agency priorities."

NSF has long been directed by Congress to encourage underrepresented groups like women and people with disabilities to participate in STEM. According to the lawsuit, the science foundation's funding cuts already halted efforts to train the next generation of scientists in fields like computer science, math and environmental science.

A lawyer for the NSF said at the hearing that the agency has the authority to fund whatever research it deems necessary — and has since its inception in 1950. In the court filing, the government also argued that its current priorities were to "create opportunities for all Americans everywhere" and "not preference some groups at the expense of others, or directly/indirectly exclude individuals or groups."

The plaintiff states are trying to "substitute their own judgement for the judgement of the agency," Adam Gitlin, an attorney for the NSF, said during the hearing.

The science foundation is still funding some projects related to expanding representation in STEM, Cronan wrote in his ruling. Per the lawsuit filed in May, for example, the University of Northern Colorado lost funding for only one of its nine programs focused on increasing participation of underrepresented groups in STEM fields.

The states are reviewing the decision, according to spokespeople from the New York and Hawaii attorney general offices. The National Science Foundation declined to comment.

New York City's deadliest shooting in 25 years – in a state with some of the toughest gun laws in the nation – is raising questions about how a gunman with a history of mental health issues was able to obtain multiple firearms and drive undetected across several states to carry out the attack.

The gunman who walked into a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday, M4 assault-style rifle in hand, and sprayed it with gunfire, had a license to carry a concealed weapon in his home state of Nevada, officials said.

He also had been placed on psychiatric hold in 2022 and 2024, law enforcement sources told CNN. But that may not have necessarily prohibited him from obtaining his license in 2022 or buying firearms – depending on the circumstances of the holds, according to gun law experts.

Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, killed four people at the 345 Park Avenue office building and injured another before he died by suicide, police said.

While public health experts continue to stress that the vast majority of people experiencing mental health challenges are not violent, questions remain about the details of Tamura's psychiatric holds and if they would have shown up in a background check.

The case underscores the wide gap in sharing mental health data with the federal government – an issue that can be attributed to inadequate funding to manage or require the data, as well as privacy issues, according to Thomas Chittum, former associate deputy director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Tamura had "a documented mental health history," according to New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch, and a previous run-in with law enforcement.

Tamura was arrested and charged with misdemeanor trespassing in 2023 in Clark County, Nevada, after he refused to leave a Las Vegas casino after attempting to cash out about $5,000, according to a police incident report. A court database suggests a district attorney declined to pursue the case, meaning the incident wouldn't have prevented him from obtaining a gun.

The case also throws private gun sales under the microscope.

The AR-15 style weapon used in the shooting was legally purchased last year by the gunman's supervisor at the Vegas casino where he worked, two law enforcement officials told CNN. The supervisor then assembled it and sold it to Tamura for $1,400, the officials said, citing an interview with the supervisor who is cooperating with authorities.

It's not yet clear whether the private sale between Tamura and the supervisor involved a background check.

But the supervisor, who has not been named by authorities, could face legal jeopardy if the investigation reveals the firearm transfer took place in Nevada and the private sale didn't follow a state law requiring background checks for private sales, according to Warren Eller, gun violence expert and associate professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

As police work to uncover a motive behind the shooting, investigators are digging into Tamura's history and examining are how he obtained multiple firearms and made his way from Las Vegas to New York City with the assault rifle.

Most mental health data isn't accessible for firearm background checks

A search of the gunman's car turned up a host of items, including additional ammunition, another loaded weapon, headphones potentially used for target practice, two cell phones, the antidepressant Zoloft and cannabis, a law enforcement source told CNN.

A note found in the gunman's pocket claimed he had CTE, a disease linked to head trauma, one that's often associated with football players, a source told CNN. New York City's chief medical examiner's office will test Tamura's remains for CTE, an office spokesperson told CNN Tuesday. The only way to diagnose the disease is through an autopsy of the brain.

As for the psychiatric holds, it's difficult to say without knowing the details whether they would have shown up in a background check or prevented Tamura from purchasing weapons, experts say.

"If you were on a 48-hour hold, if you were released at the end of that, it would not affect your ability to possess firearms under federal law," Chittum said.

Most states barely touch on the area of mental health when a person applies for a gun license due to concerns over privacy issues and stigmatizing people who have mental health issues, according to Eller. One concern, for example, is soldiers who struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, might be reluctant to seek help because they fear their treatment history would deprive them of possessing firearms.

"Between the lack of funding to make sure the background check system is effective for those problems and the legal hang ups with advocacy groups who will challenge this, that's a long road ahead," Eller said.

There's a concerted effort by veterans' groups and advocacy organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union to fight against the sharing of mental health records with the National Crime Information Center and local law enforcement, which most states rely on for background checks, according to Eller.

"Groups have been combating that because simply being mentally ill doesn't mean you're mentally incompetent, nor does it mean you're a danger," he added.

However, in cases where a person was declared incompetent by a court, faced a restraining order, involuntarily committed or deemed a danger to themselves or others due to a mental illness, the federal government restricts firearm ownership and states largely follow federal law with some variations, according to Chittum.

"Even when we have someone who has a mental health issue that prohibits them under the law, the next question is whether the background check identifies that. Historically, mental health records have been some of the hardest for FBI to obtain when doing background checks," Chittum said, adding there have been efforts to improve the availability of those records in some legislation.

Can the supervisor be prosecuted for selling Tamura the firearm?

As New York homicide detectives work to piece together a timeline of events leading up to the deadly Manhattan attack, the way Tamura obtained the high-powered M4 rifle from an associate and whether Nevada's background check laws were violated will likely come under scrutiny.

In Nevada, the private sale of a firearm between two parties requires a federal background check before the transfer is complete. Both individuals must go to a federally licensed firearm dealer, which conducts the background check on their behalf. There are limited exceptions, including firearm transfers between immediate family members, which do not require this process.

If the private sale between Tamura and the supervisor did abide by the law and the facts can't prove the supervisor had any knowledge of possible disqualifiers in Tamura's history, including intended use of the firearm, then the seller likely won't be prosecuted, according to Eller and Chittum.

Federal law doesn't impose any obligation on private gun sellers to identify the buyer, conduct a background check or keep any record of the sale, Chittum said.

The Nevada law enforcing background checks for private sales was implemented in January 2020, closing the so-called "gun show loophole" that gun safety advocates have long criticized as a means for bypassing records checks that can flag past criminal history.

Most states conduct background checks through federally licensed dealers relying on the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), while some states like Nevada have a designated "point of contact" system that offers access to state criminal history records.

Under federal law, an unlicensed person buying a firearm directly from a gun dealer must also undergo a background check, however, those who already have a concealed carry permit – like Tamura had – may be exempt because they would have already undergone a background check to get the permit.

Hours after the shooting in Manhattan, Las Vegas Police Crimestoppers received a tip from a licensed firearms dealer saying he remembered Tamura sought to buy an aftermarket trigger assembly for an M4 rifle at a Las Vegas gun show in June, a senior law enforcement official told CNN.

Tamura returned the trigger assembly the next day, saying he needed the money back to buy 500 rounds of .223 ammunition – the same kind of ammunition used in the New York shooting, according to the official. The gun dealer told police Tamura came back the next day with additional funds and re-purchased the trigger assembly, the official said.

Tamura's case calls attention to the "gray area" in the federal regulation and enforcement of private sales that exists when people buy firearms for cash in a private sale, according to Eller.

Because a concealed carry permit would exempt an individual for five years from a background check when buying a firearm from a licensed dealer, it creates a "nuanced area" where a person could obtain a license to carry and then subsequently be convicted or have a mental health prohibitor and might still be able to use their card to purchase a firearm and avoid the background check, Chittum said.

Some states recognize this issue and routinely run background checks on licensed holders to determine if their license is still valid, Chittum said. Red flag laws, including the one in Nevada, aim to keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves or others.

But such laws are only effective if the individual demonstrated warning signs so that others can alert law enforcement and initiate the process of revoking the person's firearm, Chittum said. It's not clear if Tamura demonstrated any warning signs that would trigger the state's red flag law.

New York governor calls for assault weapon ban

The style of weapon Tamura used to slaughter four people has commonly been seen in some of the nation's deadliest mass shootings and has prompted renewed calls by progressive lawmakers for increased regulation.

"In the State of New York, you cannot buy one of these," Gov. Kathy Hochul told CNN on Tuesday, criticizing what she said were "much looser laws in the State of Nevada than we have here."

Hochul called on federal lawmakers to pass a national assault weapon ban that would limit access to high-powered guns like the AR-15 style rifle used in Monday's massacre and slammed GOP counterparts whom she accused of being "intimidated by the gun lobby."

"We need a national awakening here, people need to be talked about this once again and it shouldn't just happen in the wake of a tragedy like this," said Hochul.

Over the course of three days of investigative hearings, the National Transportation and Safety Board sought to gather more information about the factors that lead to the deadly midair collision over Washington, D.C., in January between an Army helicopter and a passenger plane.

The NTSB heard testimony from air traffic controllers, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Army, and the families of several of the victims were in attendance. At one point on the first day of the hearings, NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said of the circumstances leading up to the crash, "Every sign was there that there was a safety risk." Addressing the families, she said the hearings would be "a critical part of our ongoing investigation."

On Jan. 29, a Black Hawk helicopter struck an American Airlines flight from Wichita, Kansas, as it was coming in for a landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport, killing all 67 people aboard both aircraft.

The NTSB will continue its fact finding and will compile a final report with determinations about the probable cause, likely within the next year.

Here are the top takeaways from the hearings:

Helicopter's altitude measurements showed significant discrepancies

The barometric altimeter the Black Hawk crew members were relying on may have given them incorrect information, according to NTSB investigators, because the crew was calling out altitudes that were lower than the actual height at which the helicopter was flying.

The helicopter and commercial airliner collided approximately 300 feet above the Potomac River, and the maximum altitude for helicopters at that part of the route near D.C.'s Reagan Airport is 200 feet.

The NTSB, as part of its investigation, tested three helicopters that are in the same battalion as the one that crashed and found that the barometric altimeter for all three was off by 80 to 130 feet. Army representatives on Wednesday told investigators that discrepancy is within the accepted variability because pilots are trained to maintain their altitude at plus or minus 100 feet.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy told CBS News' senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave the NTSB calculated the margin of error on Route Four in that area of the Potomac to be 75 feet.

The Army said it is conducting additional reviews to determine how to proceed, frustrating investigators who asked why it would not make changes to the equipment, based on the findings of the NTSB tests.

In 2022, an FAA working group considered moving helicopter traffic away from the airport, but ultimately did not.

Airplane pilots knew they were going to be hit

Transcripts from the airplane's cockpit voice recorder show the pilots received an automated verbal warning about traffic in the vicinity approximately 20 seconds before the collision. Less than two seconds before impact, the pilots shouted in alarm. Flight data indicates the plane's pilots attempted to climb to avoid the helicopter just before impact.

The transcripts also reveal the pilots of the American Airlines flight questioned the move to Runway 33. The plane was originally supposed to land on Runway 1 but was redirected by air traffic controllers to Runway 33. As it was trying to land on that runway, the helicopter and plane collided.

Black Hawk pilots missed key command from air traffic controller

The pilots of the Black Hawk missed a key word when communicating with the air traffic control tower, according to a transcript released during the hearings of the conversation between the helicopter crew and the control tower.

Fifteen seconds before the collision, DCA Tower asked the helicopter if it had the regional jet in sight. Four seconds later, the DCA Tower instructed the helicopter to pass behind the plane. The Black Hawk's cockpit voice recorder indicated that the phrase "pass behind" was rendered inaudible because a helicopter crew member pressed the microphone key.

FAA acknowledged air traffic controller did not warn airliner that the helicopter might cross its path

Although it was already known — based on control tower audio from that night — that the controller did not warn the American Airlines plane that the Black Hawk might cross its path, the FAA only openly acknowledged this for the first time during this week's hearings.

In a key moment from the second day, Homendy asked FAA Air Traffic Oversight Service executive director Nick Fuller if any traffic advisories or alerts were issued to the plane. He responded, "No safety alerts."

Homendy then asked, "Should the local controller have let the [plane] crew know that there was a helicopter there?"

"Yes," Fuller responded.

Medivac pilot said presence of military helicopters in National Airport airspace makes him "uncomfortable"

Rick Dressler, of Metro Aviation – which operates medical helicopters — was asked if there are units flying in the National Airport airspace that make him uncomfortable.

"I don't like saying that first heli of [U.S. Air Force] from Andrews (Air Base) and I don't like saying that 12th Aviation Battalion gives us all pause in the community…," Dressler said, but "we are all very uncomfortable when those two units are operating."

During the hearing, the Army admitted helicopters regularly flew below flights that land at Reagan National Airport.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday expanded the scope of a Louisiana congressional redistricting dispute that has been pending for months by ordering new briefing on a legal question that could further weaken the landmark Voting Rights Act.

The court issued an order asking the lawyers to address whether, in seeking to comply with the 1965 law that protects minority voting rights, Louisiana violated the Constitution's 14th and 15th Amendments enacted after the Civil War to ensure Black people were treated equally under the law.

If the court rules that the state did violate the Constitution, it would mean states cannot cite the need to comply with the Voting Rights Act if they use race as a consideration during the map-drawing process, as they currently can.

Rick Hasen, an election law expert at the UCLA School of Law, wrote on his Election Law Blog that the order "appears to put the constitutionality of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act into question." That provision bars voting practices or rules that discriminate against minority groups.

The Supreme Court's 6-3 conservative majority is often receptive to arguments that the Constitution is "colorblind," meaning no consideration of race can ever be lawful even if it is aimed at remedying past discrimination. In 2013, the court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in a case from Alabama and further weakened it in a 2021 case from Arizona.

The justices heard arguments in the Louisiana case on more technical, less contentious questions in March and was originally expected to issue a ruling by the end of June. Even then, the constitutional issue loomed large.

The new order did not indicate whether the court will hear another round of arguments before it issues a ruling in the case.

The Louisiana map in question, which is currently in effect, includes two majority-Black districts for the first time in years.

The complicated case arose from litigation over an earlier map drawn by the state legislature after the 2020 census that included just one Black-majority district out of the state's six districts. About a third of the state's population is Black.

Civil rights groups, including the Legal Defense Fund, won a legal challenge, arguing that the Voting Rights Act required two majority-Black districts.

But after the new map was drawn, a group of self-identified "non-African American" voters led by Phillip Callais and 11 other plaintiffs filed another lawsuit, saying the latest map violated the 14th Amendment.

As recently as 2023, the Supreme Court reaffirmed the Voting Rights Act in a congressional redistricting case arising from Alabama. But conservatives raised questions about whether key elements of the law should ultimately be struck down.

Micah Parsons wants a trade from the Dallas Cowboys. The star pass rusher released a lengthy statement Friday, detailing his frustrations with the team's approach to negotiating his next contract.

Parsons posted his statement on X with the caption, "Thank you Dallas." In the note, Parsons detailed the timeline of his contact negotiations with the team. Early in the note, Parsons wrote, "I no longer want to be here." He then claimed he and his agent reached out to the Cowboys prior to the start of the 2024 NFL season and again after the 2024 season about a new contract, only to be ignored by the team.

Parsons then confirmed earlier reports suggesting he met with team owner Jerry Jones in March "to talk about leadership." At that meeting, Parsons claimed Jones started to discuss Parsons' next contract. Parsons said he engaged in a back-and-forth with Jones over contract details, but did not feel it was "a formal negotiation." At the end of that meeting, Parsons said he told Jones his agent would reach out to further discuss the new deal. When Parsons' agent got in touch with the team, the Cowboys went silent, according to Parsons.

At the end of the note, Parsons said the Cowboys have yet to speak with his agent regarding a new contract. He then confirmed he submitted a trade request to team COO and co-owner Stephen Jones.

"Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract. Not one demand has been made by my agent about money years or anything else. Still I stayed quiet but again after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally."

Despite that request, the Cowboys reportedly have no desire to trade Parsons, according to Diana Russini of The Athletic.

Parsons, 26, has one year left on his current contract. He's set to make $24 million in 2025 before hitting the free-agent market.

Since being drafted by the Cowboys with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Parsons has emerged as one of the best defenders in the league. He's made the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons and is a two-time first-team All-Pro selection.

Despite his contract situation, Parsons showed up at voluntary workouts in April to lend his support to new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Parsons also showed up for training camp, though he has not participated in practices due to his contract situation.

Friday's trade request comes a day after Parsons tweeted out a GIF implying it would be his final season with the Cowboys. Prior to Parsons releasing his statement Friday, at least two Cowboys defenders showed support for the star pass rusher by changing their social media avatars to pictures that included Parsons.

Star receiver CeeDee Lamb weighed in on the situation, telling the Cowboys to "just pay the man" in a post on X.

Then Phillies manager Rob Thomson gave up his jersey number for the flame-throwing pitcher.

After being traded to Philadelphia on Wednesday, Durán inquired about wearing No. 59.

"They said, 'No, only one person has it,'" Durán recalled Friday. "And I said, 'Who?' They said, 'You don't know who has that number?' I said, 'No.' They said, 'It's the manager.'"

Durán added before smiling: "I said, 'Damn.'"

Reporters broke out in laughter. Durán laughed, too.

Durán didn't push for Thomson's number. Thomson made the next move, especially for a pitcher who is 6-4 with a 2.01 ERA and 16 saves this season and averages 100.2 mph when he throws his four-seam fastball.

While the trade cost Thomson his number and the Phillies two significant prospects, the team also gained one of the best closer entrances in baseball. Duran made his Phillies debut on Friday and threw a perfect ninth inning to close out a 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Although the trade happened on the road during the Phillies' 9-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox, Thomson called Durán afterward.

"We were chit-chatting, and I just said, 'Hey, look, the number really doesn't mean much to me,'" Thomson told reporters Friday. "'But if it makes you feel better, I'm all in.'

"He said, 'Well, you know ... yeah, I've had it my whole career.' And I said, 'Then it's yours.'"

Durán said he's "got that number everywhere," including as part of the design of his family swimming pool in his native Dominican Republic.

When asked Friday how much it meant to him that he was able to keep No. 59, Durán gave a sigh of relief.

"My wife almost cried," he said.

Thomson's wife, on the other hand, has to get used to a new number.

"The only one that's upset at this point is my wife," Thomson joked. "Because all her merchandise has 59 on it. Now we got to go buy her new stuff."

Thomson will be wearing No. 49, which he said is a nod to former New York Yankees star Ron Guidry. Thomson coached for the Yankees from 2008-17 before joining the Phillies' staff.

The wardrobe change is one Thomson welcomes.

He's got his closer for a potential second-half run that the Phillies are hoping ends with their first World Series championship since 2008.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Hamilton County finalized a new 11-year lease on Friday that includes $470 million in renovations to Paycor Stadium.

Hamilton County commissioners approved a version of the lease on Thursday but the Bengals did not sign because they had not seen the version that county officials approved. Both sides negotiated through the night before the Bengals signed off and commissioners approved during a special meeting on Friday.

The lease keeps the team at their downtown home through at least 2036. It also includes 10 additional option years that could extend it through June 2046.

"The Bengals thank Hamilton County and its Commissioners for demonstrating leadership and taking steps that continue moving Cincinnati forward," Bengals Executive Vice President Katie Blackburn said in a statement. "It solidifies the future of the Bengals in Cincinnati, our beloved home, for many years to come. Today's deal embodies a responsible approach for the future, while at the same time keeping Paycor Stadium a great venue that can provide our great fans the great gameday experience they deserve."

The county will contribute $350 million toward the renovations, and the Bengals will pay $120 million. The plan is far less than the $830 million the Bengals originally proposed.

The Bengals and Hamilton County will also work to secure state funding. The Cleveland Browns are receiving $600 million from unclaimed funds in Ohio's budget recently signed by Gov. Mike DeWine. The Browns are planning to build a new domed stadium in Brookpark, Ohio, near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

The Bengals have proposed improvements to the club lounges, stadium suites, concessions and scoreboards. A permanent indoor facility is also on the long-term wish list. Cincinnati was the only northern NFL team without an indoor practice facility for many seasons until 2022, when it added an indoor practice bubble across the street from its outdoor fields.

Owner Mike Brown said on July 21 that the planned improvements and requests were in line with other medium- to small-market NFL franchises.

"We aren't looking for fancy, new things," Brown said. "We're going to try to spruce up the club area. There are some areas around and about in the concession area. There are things that are going to be improved but we aren't going to put a dome over the top. We aren't going to put a mammoth scoreboard in. It is going to be what it has been, pretty much, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that."

The Bengals have called Paycor Stadium home since 2000. It was originally named Paul Brown Stadium until the team sold the naming rights in August 2022.

The finalized lease wraps up what had been a long and at times contentious period of negotiations between Hamilton County and the Bengals. The original 1996 lease has been cited by many as what city, county or state governments should not do when trying to build a new stadium or arena for a team and giving that franchise too much control of the process.

"We stood firm on what we thought was best. I think that this lease agreement is good for the people and the team. This I feel is the people's lease and I feel proud of that," Stephanie Summerow Dumas, one of Hamilton County's three commissioners, said on Friday.

Luke Bryan isn't a fan of faking it, and the country star recently promised fans they never had to worry about him phoning in a performance, no matter how rough his voice might sound

"I'll never dive into the lip-syncing world," Bryan, 49, said in an interview with Taste of Country Nights published on August 1. "You'll always be hearing me, whether it's a little froggy or not. I'll never try to fool anybody or sing around it."

In the past, Bryan has made fans aware if he wasn't feeling well or experiencing a particularly taxing moment. Instead, he lets the fans take up the slack – something they're more than happy to do most of the time.

"Sometimes you're so stressed about not being able to sing like you want to, if you tell the fans you're under the weather, it relaxes you a little bit and I'll actually just start relaxing and singing better," he explained.

The "Mind of a Country Boy" was recently forced to cancel a few of his shows due to a bout with COVID-19, but he said that he prefers to do that instead of trying to power through a concert if he's not at his best. During his June 19 performance in Rogers, Arkansas, Bryan had to stop halfway through after he began experiencing vocal issues. He refunded fans their money, but the virus took a toll on him. The American Idol host also had to cancel two of his upcoming shows in Texas and reschedule them for later this year in September.

Bryan later opened up about his illness when he returned to the stage in Greenville, South Carolina, on July 17.

"Three weeks ago, I got COVID," the "Crash My Party" artist told the crowd. "You can boo that s--t all you want, but I got it. I had to cancel some shows, and now I'm back, but I'm not 100 percent cause it's still kicking my a--."

Bryan's current tour still has several more dates on the calendar and will wrap up in January 2026.

And just like that, a universe of fun, friendship and fashion is coming to an end.

Michael Patrick King, showrunner of the "Sex and the City" sequel "And Just Like That ...," announced on Instagram that the series will end after the third season concludes. Fans have a two-part finale to savor later this month.

"It's with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years," he wrote.

King said he decided to wrap things up while writing the season's final episode. He then split the finale into two episodes. The last episode will drop Aug. 14.

In a long, heartfelt Instagram post of her own, Sarah Jessica Parker, who played the iconic Carrie Bradshaw character in both series, called the sequel "all joy, adventure, the greatest kind of hard work alongside the most extraordinary talent." She included a montage of Carrie's fashion and moments.

Parker added: "I am better for every single day I spent with you. It will be forever before I forget. The whole thing. Thank you all. I love you so."

Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon returned for the sequel. Largely absent was Kim Cattrall and her Samantha Jones, though Cattrall did make a brief, uncredited cameo in the Season 2 finale. Samantha's absence was explained as a move to London. Reports of pay and personal disputes bubbled over behind the scenes.

The original series ran from 1998 to 2004, taking pop culture by storm with the style and drama of the 30-something friends in New York City. They shopped. They brunched. They dated, leaning on each other as Parker's Carrie, a writer, chronicled it all.

The sequel picks up their lives in their mid-50s, to mixed reviews. Carrie became a widow. Nixon's Miranda Hobbes came out as queer. Davis' Charlotte York Goldenblatt copes with husband Harry's prostate cancer diagnosis.

Fashion remains ever-present, including all those iconic heels still clacking through New York's brownstone-lined streets.

In her farewell post, Parker wrote of her stylish Carrie that she, "Changed homes, time zones, boyfriends, her mind, her shoes, her hair, but never her love and devotion to New York City." She called Carrie "my professional heartbeat for 27 years."

Six watches that had been stolen from actor Keanu Reeves in Los Angeles were handed over to the FBI this week at the US Embassy in Santiago, Chile, nearly 9,000 kilometers away, to be returned to their owner.

The discovery of the luxury watches "was circumstantial," the embassy said, as it occurred during a broader police investigation into home burglaries in the eastern part of the Chilean capital. Authorities were targeting a criminal group, not imagining its ramifications would extend to Hollywood.

"In 2023, this gang was committing robbery offenses. Once they were fenced in and (the case) became widely reported due to the violence they used, some of these individuals migrated and began committing crimes abroad using the same modus operandi," Deputy Prefect Marcelo Varas, head of the Robbery and Criminal Intervention Investigation Brigade of the Chilean Investigative Police, told CNN. Varas explained that the gang sought to break into empty homes, but if they encountered someone, they would act violently.

During the operations and raids, investigators located one of the suspects in a house in the commune of Peñalolén, where they found valuable items, including watches, one of which bore an inscription.

"One of the detectives, who liked the John Wick film series, managed to recognize the item," Varas said. "He had read the story about the (stunt) doubles, each of whom had been given a watch. We tracked them down and actually made a match," he added.

Rolex from a movie

In 2021, Reeves gifted Rolex Submariners to the stunt crew he worked with on "John Wick: Chapter 4." Each one had his name on the back with the caption, "Thank you, JW4, 2021, The John Wick Five."

Prosecutor Claudia Barraza said at the embassy handover ceremony there was no evidence that the criminal group that broke into Reeves' home was the same one that brought the watches to Chile.

But Varas pointed out that authorities had also seized a cell phone used by the individual who allegedly committed the robbery. On that device, they found photos taken in the United States showing the watch in question, a gun, and the actor's driver's license, leading investigators to believe the pictures were taken at Reeves' home.

Varas explained that, due to legal issues, they had to wait for the actor to confirm that they were his belongings, and said he recognized them from photos at a Los Angeles police station.

In the John Wick saga, ironically, Reeves plays a former hitman seeking revenge after his home was burglarized (and his dog killed). But the 2023 incident isn't the only break-in the movie star has experienced. In 2014, months before the release of the first film in the series, the Los Angeles Police reported two break-ins at his home in a span of three days, although no burglaries were reported during those incidents.

In the 2023 robbery, Reeves' losses are believed to have amounted to $7 million, according to Hugo Haeger, deputy director of Police and Criminal Investigation in Chile.

CNN has reached out to the FBI for more information on the case.

Varas says there's "always" coordination with other countries' security agencies, which includes the exchange of intelligence information.

One aspect of the investigation is determining how the stolen items entered Chile. The deputy prefect indicated that gangs most commonly use parcel systems or send items through tourists with no criminal record. Thus, the watch could easily have passed through airport security on the wrist of a traveler who didn't raise suspicions.

"Watches are a prized possession; there are people who dedicate themselves to collecting them. If it's a brand, or a piece valued for being unique, or a famous actor's, they want it even more," Varas said. In the case of Reeves' Rolex Submariner, the model is offered for more than $10,000 in official stores, but on the black market and with the actor's name on it, it could be worth much more.

The fates of the other suspected gang members vary. The brother of the alleged perpetrator of the Los Angeles robbery has been convicted of robbery with intimidation and customs fraud. Another suspect, Varas notes, died in a confrontation between criminal gangs. The investigator also said that, while one traveled to the US and continued committing crimes, another traveled to Argentina, where he was arrested for home robberies in Buenos Aires.

"Unfortunately, we export this type of crime, but we also provide" information to the law enforcement agencies, Varas said.

Visa waiver under scrutiny

In December, following home burglaries in wealthy areas of Oakland County, Michigan, Sheriff Mike Bouchard told Fox 2 that "extremely well-trained" Chileans were to blame. He demanded an end to Chile's participation in the Visa Waiver program, which allows its citizens to enter the US without a visa for travel of up to 90 days for tourism or business. His comments caused an uproar in the South American country.

During a recent visit to Chile, US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem signed a letter of intent to expand a Biometric Identification Transnational Migration Alert program with Chile, arguing that is necessary for tracking criminals. Regarding visas, she said, "Chile's continued collaboration with our visa waiver program is invaluable to our country, and we appreciate their partnership in that regard."

Meanwhile, the deputy legal attaché at the US Embassy, Blaine Freestone, who will be responsible for personally presenting the watches to Reeves, emphasized that "thanks to the ongoing cooperation with Chilean authorities, justice is being delivered to victims of transnational crimes."

Varas asserted that the Visa Waiver program generates ongoing cooperation from law enforcement agencies. "They need our information," he said.

ESPN has reached a deal with the NFL to purchase RedZone, NFL Network and other league holdings, The Athletic reported on Friday.

The NFL will receive equity in ESPN that "is potentially worth billions" in exchange, according to the report. An official announcement is expected next week, ending a four-year period of complicated, on-and-off negotiations.

Both sides declined to provide comment to The Athletic.

In addition to RedZone and NFL Network, ESPN will gain access to seven more regular-season games and the NFL's fantasy football operations, as well as the potential to integrate sports betting and other special features.

The NFL's equity stake in ESPN could be as much as 10 percent, CNBC first reported and The Athletic confirmed.

An ESPN-NFL deal would require regulatory approval, a process that could take up to a year to complete.

The two sides already have a cozy relationship. ESPN pays the NFL about $2.7 billion per year to air a total of 25 games, including "Monday Night Football." The network also holds the rights to the Super Bowls in 2027 and 2031.

Friday's reported agreement comes as ESPN is preparing to launch its direct-to-consumer service, with subscribers paying $29.99 per month to bypass cable and satellite providers to view all of the network's programming through the ESPN app.

Olympics greats Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte rip USA Swimming during 2025 World Championships: 'Call it a funeral'

Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte aren't happy with the way Team USA has performed at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. Phelps and Lochte expressed their disappointment with the team, sharing an Instagram post proclaiming it was time to hold a funeral for USA Swimming.

Lochte was the first to share the image, which features people in mourning at a funeral. The image contains a tombstone, which reads: "In loving memory of United States Swimming."

The tombstone then lists the dates 1980-2025, suggesting USA Swimming lived 45 years before dying in 2025. Under those dates lies an epitaph, which reads, "They set the bar high — until they stopped reaching for it."

It's unclear whether Lochte found the image elsewhere or asked for it to be generated. The image appears to be made by A.I.

Phelps shared the image on Instagram, adding his own critique of USA Swimming. Phelps' comment read, "Is this the wake up call USA Swimming needed? Let's find out....."

Lochte and Phelps opted to share the image during the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. Team USA got out to a slow start at the event, as multiple members of the team dealt with acute gastroenteritis.

Despite those early struggles, the team secured five gold medals as of Friday morning. That tied Team USA with Australia for the most swimming medals at the event. Team USA does own the most overall swimming medals at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, with 20.

That performance isn't good enough for Lochte and Phelps, who happen to know a thing or two about the sport. Phelps is widely celebrated as one of the best swimmers — and one of the best Olympic athletes — of all time. He won 23 gold medals, the most of any Olympian. He also holds the record for most gold medals in individual events, with 13. Long after his retirement, Phelps remains one of the most prominent names in the sport.

Lochte is a six-time Olympic gold medalist, winning events between 2004 and 2016. Two of Lochte's gold medals came in individual events. The other four came in relays, where Phelps was one of his teammates. The pair played a major role in Team USA's swimming dominance during their careers.

Between 2003 and 2022, Team USA secured the most gold medals in swimming at the World Championships every year they were held. Team USA finished second to Australia in 2023, ending that streak, but then bounced back to reclaim first at the 2024 Olympics.

Despite Team USA tying for the lead in gold medals and leading the pack with 20 overall swimming medals in 2025, Lochte and Phelps clearly view the squad's performance as a major disappointment.

The Cleveland Guardians' clubhouse had some notable changes on the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 1.

The lockers for closer Emmanuel Clase and starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz were cleared out, according to Zack Meisel of The Athletic.

Both players were placed on leave in July, related to an ongoing investigation into gambling by Major League Baseball. If they are found guilty, both could potentially receive a lifetime ban.

It was not made clear if a decision had been reached involving the two players or if it is just potential locker changes in the clubhouse following the conclusion of the MLB trade deadline on July 31.

Why was Luis L. Ortiz placed on leave?

Ortiz was placed on leave on July 3 after two of his pitches received unusual gambling activity.

Both were sliders outside of the strike zone at the start of an inning in games played in June.

Some gambling websites allow users to bet on the first pitch of an MLB at-bat.

Clase's name surfaced during the investigation that involved Ortiz.

The league is looking to see if Clase had violated the MLB's gambling policy.

Clase has been considered as one of the league's best closers and his name was mentioned in trade rumors leading up to the deadline.

While the Guardians could have received a nice return in a trade for the three-time All-Star, instead, they still have Clase under contract with some uncertainty about his future.

Stevie Nicks has announced that she'll be rescheduling her upcoming tour dates in August and September due to a fractured shoulder that requires ample recovery time.

The news was revealed on Nicks' Instagram account, announcing the dates for the rescheduled shows. "Due to a recent injury resulting in a fractured shoulder that will require recovery time, Stevie Nicks' scheduled concerts in August and September will be rescheduled. Please note that October dates will be unaffected," reads the post. "Stevie looks forward to seeing everyone soon and apologizes to the fans for this inconvenience."

Tickets for the rescheduled dates will be honored at the newly announced perfomrances.

Nicks was originally slated to play nine dates across August and September, with shows scheduled for Brooklyn's Barclays Center and Boston's TD Garden. The rescheduled tour dates will take place from late October through mid-December. The previously announced October performances will occur as planned.

Most recently, Nicks and her Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham announced that their legendary album "Buckingham Nicks," which has been out of print in any format in the U.S. since the early 1980s, will be released in all formats on September 19. The album was released in 1973 before the two joined Fleetwood Mac.
