Witkoff and Huckabee will visit Gaza to survey aid distribution sites

Washington — U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee are heading to Gaza on Friday to survey food and aid distribution sites and meet with people living there, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Their visit is prompted by a dire humanitarian crisis, as children and adults in Gaza are struggling to survive off insufficient food and the death toll for people trying to get aid in Gaza mounts. President Trump said earlier this week that the U.S. and Israel will partner to run new food centers in the region, but he said Israel would preside over the centers to "make sure the distribution is proper."

Leavitt said Witkoff and Huckabee have been in Israel meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other leaders about the situation in Gaza. Netanyahu has said, incorrectly, that there is "no starvation" in Gaza, despite emerging photos of emaciated children and repeated warnings from food security experts.

"President Trump is a humanitarian with a big heart," Leavitt said during Thursday's White House press briefing. "And that's why he sent special envoy Witkoff to the region in an effort to save lives and end this crisis. Tomorrow, special envoy Witkoff and Ambassador Huckabee will be traveling into Gaza to inspect to the current distribution sites and secure a plan to deliver more food, and meet with local Gazans to hear firsthand about this dire situation on the ground. The special envoy and the ambassador will brief the president immediately after their visit to approve a final plan for food and aid distribution into the region."

Leavitt said the administration will provide more details once the president approves a plan. She also said the meetings Witkoff and Huckabee have had with Netanyahu and other leaders have been productive.

Mr. Trump earlier this week contradicted Netanyahu's assessment denying grave hunger in Gaza. The U.S. president said the children in Gaza "look very hungry."

"There is real starvation in Gaza — you can't fake that," he told reporters.

Also at issue is the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a private food distribution organization that has faced heavy criticism for its food delivery methods and the number of people who have been killed trying to reach its distribution sites in Gaza.

The U.S. and Israel have both supported the relatively new GHF to deliver aid in Gaza over the United Nations. A group of Democratic senators, led by Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, is urging the Trump administration to "immediately cease all U.S. funding for GHF and resume support for the existing UN-led aid coordination mechanisms with enhanced oversight to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches civilians in need," the senators wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

A senior U.S. official told CBS News on Wednesday that the U.S. has committed $30 million for aid in Gaza and those funds would be distributed "in the next day or so."

"The United States of America supports GHF, but we would support any other mechanism that delivers food and the other needs of the Gazan people in a safe, secure fashion that does not get manipulated or distorted or taken advantage of by Hamas, the official said, adding, "I'd like to think that some of the NGOs that are not succeeding right now would turn to GHF and say, let's work together for the sake of the Gazans in Gaza."

President Donald Trump continues to put his personal stamp on the White House with a new $200 million ballroom.

Work will begin on the site in September and will be paid for by Trump and unidentified donors, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Leavitt announced the project at her press briefing on Thursday, showing renderings of what the finished product will look like. She said it will be completed "long before" Trump's term is up.

"We are proud to announce that the construction of the new White House ballroom will begin. For 150 years, presidents, administrations and White House staff have longed for a large event space on the White House complex that can hold substantially more guests than currently allowed," she told reporters.

"The White House is one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in the world, yet the White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders in other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building's entrance," she said.

This is the latest change Trump is making to the White House. Currently, the famous Rose Garden is also under construction with pavement replacing the grass. He also paid to have two, 88-foot-tall flagpoles put up on the White House North and South Lawns.

Trump also redecorated the Oval Office with an extensive amount of gold details, including on picture frames and in furnishings surrounding the fireplace.

The artist renderings of what the new ballroom will look like shows it, too, will be filled with gold trim, similar to decorations at the ballroom at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

Trump has long said he wanted to build a ballroom at the White House akin to the one at Mar-a-Lago -- which Trump in his first term dubbed at times his "Winter White House."

At his Turnberry golf property in Scotland this past weekend, Trump told European Council President Ursula von der Leyen, "You know, we just built this ballroom, and we're building a great ballroom at the White House."

Trump spoke about the project later Thursday during an executive order signing in the Roosevelt Room, saying they retained "the best architects and engineers" to build it and it will be "top of the line."

"I'm good at building things. And we'll get it built quickly and on time. It'll be beautiful," he said.

"I always said I was going to do something about the ballroom because they should have one. So we'll be leaving it. It'll be a great legacy project and I think it'll be special," Trump added.

The ballroom addition will be separated from the main building and positioned off the White House East Wing.

"It won't interfere with the current building ... It'll be near it, but not touching it and pays total respect to the existing building, which I'm the biggest fan of. It's my favorite," Trump said.

When asked how much of the East Wing will be torn down for the upcoming construction -- which currently holds the office of the first lady, the White House military office, and the visitor office -- Leavitt said offices in the East Wing would be vacated while it is "modernized."

"The necessary construction will take place," Leavitt said.

In a press release, the White House said Trump has held several meetings with members of the White House staff, the National Park Service, the White House Military Office, and the United States Secret Service to discuss design features and planning.

"The President and the Trump White House are "fully committed to working with the appropriate organizations to preserve the special history of the white House, while building a beautiful ballroom that can be enjoyed by future administrations and generations of Americans to come," White House chief of staff Susie Wiles said.

"President Trump is a builder at heart and has an extraordinary eye for detail," Wiles said.

The Tampa Bay Rays got hit by rain and bit by the injury bug during Thursday's series finale in New York.

Three Rays players — first baseman Jonathan Aranda, designated hitter Yandy Díaz and left fielder Chandler Simpson — left the ultimately rain-delayed game with injuries.

Aranda's looked the most serious.

It occurred in the top of the fifth inning, half an inning before the delay in the Bronx. With rain dressing the infield, Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton hit a soft ground ball to third base, where Junior Caminero scurried to make a play on the slow roller.

Caminero, who came into the day with 10 errors at third base this season, rushed the throw to first. It was off the mark, and Aranda extended to reel it in for the putout. As the first-time All-Star reached to catch the ball, he made contact with a sprinting Stanton.

Aranda's glove, and left wrist, collided with the 6-foot-6, 245-pound Stanton. Aranda dropped the ball and then his mitt before clutching his wrist, hopping in pain and then crouching and falling to the ground. He was attended to by an athletic trainer and Rays manager Kevin Cash.

The 27-year-old entered the afternoon slashing .315/.393/.478 with 12 home runs and 53 RBI. He added an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, helping Tampa Bay chip away at a then-7-0 Yankees lead.

Following his injury, Aranda eventually left the field and was replaced by Brandon Lowe, who began the game at second base. José Caballero took Lowe's spot at second.

Díaz sustained a right forearm contusion in the top of the fourth inning, when he was struck by a pitch from Yankees righty Marcus Stroman.

Simpson left the game in the bottom of the third with a left hand injury. He had grounded out in the top half of the frame but didn't remove himself from the contest until he was in left field on the other side of the inning.

Mandy Moore's family enjoyed some time by the water on their recent trip to Mexico.

The Tangled actress, 41, shared an adorable photo of her family of five on Instagram on Thursday, July 31, as she recounted her time spent at the beach on vacation. In the sweet photo, Moore could be seen sitting in the surf alongside her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, while her son Oscar "Ozzy," 2, hung on around her neck.

Sitting beside the star, her 4-year-old son August "Gus" was pictured squishing his hands into the sand and looking down. Goldsmith propped up the couple's newest addition, 10-month-old daughter Louise "Lou," as she sat in his lap.

Other snaps showed the family enjoying the beach and watching sunsets. "Nothing beats a beach vacation with some of your besties (here's looking you at you @whatsgabycookin)," Moore wrote in her caption. "What an epic few days, @fspuntamita! We can't wait to come back (Gus hasn't stopped talking about it)!!"

Moore recently appeared on Kylie Kelce's podcast Not Gonna Lie and was asked by the podcaster if she got a lot of opinions about having her baby daughter Lou when she was 40.

"Yes and no. I mean, I feel like having my third child at 40, this term 'geriatric pregnancy' that's thrown around. I think at least in my experience, so many of my friends are having kids later in life, whether it's by choice or it's by circumstance or biology," Moore began.

"I think the thing that I had the most trouble with is just like this system in general kind of treating us as this anomaly that we're like too old and we're too complicated or high risk, and really, it's like, 'Nope, we're just human beings.'"

"So it's less about how I think the people and the perceptions they may have had, like the people in my life, it was just more about the healthcare system in general. It feels like such an outdated one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to just women in general."

Earlier this year in May, Moore celebrated her first Mother's Day as a mom of three by sharing an Instagram post dedicated to her mom, Stacy Moore, who also has three children. The carousel contained four throwback images of Mandy with her mom, one of which also included her grandma, Eileen.

"Happy Mother's Day to all the moms and mother figures in our lives, including my own mama who juggled 3 kids effortlessly (HOW!??)," she captioned the post, before reflecting on her personal experience with motherhood.

"Being a mom is the single greatest gift of my life and while you're never off the clock worrying or stressing or planning, the quiet, unmistakable joy triumphs over everything else," the actress continued. "I'm endlessly grateful to the moms in my life who model what it takes, lend an ear, make the best suggestions, and generally make me feel less alone on the journey."

Dozens of countries with no deals face higher tariffs as trade deadline nears

WASHINGTON (AP) — Numerous countries around the world are facing the prospect of much higher duties on their exports to the United States on Friday, a potential blow to the global economy, because they haven't yet reached a trade deal with the Trump administration.

Some of the United States' biggest trading partners have reached agreements, or at least the outlines of one, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Even so, those countries face much higher tariffs than were in effect before Trump took office. And other large trading partners — most notably China and Mexico — received an extension to keep negotiating and won't be hit with new duties Friday, but they will likely end up paying more.

President Donald Trump intends the duties to bring back manufacturing to the United States, while also forcing other countries to reduce their trade barriers to U.S. exports. Trump argues that foreign exporters will pay the cost of the tariffs, but so far economists have found that most are being paid by U.S. companies. And measures of U.S. inflation have started to tick higher as prices of imported goods, such as furniture, appliances, and toys rise.

For those countries without an agreement, they could face duties of as much as 50%, including on large economies such as Brazil, Canada, Taiwan, and India. Many smaller countries are also on track to pay more, including South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and even tiny Lesotho.

The duties originated from Trump's April 2 "Liberation Day" announcement that the United States would impose import taxes of up to 50% on nearly 60 countries and economies, including the 27-nation European Union. Those duties, originally scheduled for April 9, were then postponed twice, first to July 9 and then Aug. 1.

Will the deadline hold this time?

As of Thursday afternoon, White House representatives — and Trump himself — insisted that no more delays were possible.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that Trump "at some point this afternoon or later this evening" will sign an order to impose new tariff rates starting midnight on Friday.

Countries that have not received a prior letter on tariffs from Trump or negotiated a trade framework will be notified of their likely tariff rates, Leavitt said, either in the form of a letter or Trump's executive order. At least two dozen countries were sent letters setting out their tariff rates.

On Wednesday, Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social, "THE AUGUST FIRST DEADLINE IS THE AUGUST FIRST DEADLINE — IT STANDS STRONG, AND WILL NOT BE EXTENDED."

Which countries have a trade agreement?

In a flurry of last minute deal-making, the Trump has been announcing agreements as late as Thursday, but they are largely short on details.

On Thursday, the U.S. and Pakistan reached a trade agreement expected to allow Washington to help develop Pakistan's largely untapped oil reserves and lower tariffs for the South Asian country.

And on Wednesday, Trump announced a deal with South Korea that would impose 15% tariffs on goods from that country. That is below the 25% duties that Trump threatened in April.

Agreements have also been reached with the European Union, Pakistan, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom. The agreement with the Philippines barely reduced the tariff it will pay, from 20% to 19%.

And which countries don't?

The exact number of countries facing higher duties isn't clear, but the majority of the 200 have not made deals. Trump has already slapped large duties on Brazil and India even before the deadline was reached.

In the case of Brazil, Trump signed an executive order late Wednesday imposing a 50% duty on imports, though he exempted several large categories, including aircraft, aluminum, and energy products. Trump is angry at Brazil's government because it is prosecuting its former president, Jair Bolsonaro, for attempting to overturn his election loss in 2022. Trump was indicted on a similar charge in 2023.

While Trump has sought to justify the widespread tariffs as an effort to combat the United States' chronic trade deficits, the U.S. actually has a trade surplus with Brazil — meaning it sells more goods and services to Brazil than it buys from that country.

Negotiations between the U.S. and Canada have been complicated by the Canadian government's announcement that it will recognize a Palestinian state in September. Trump said early Thursday that the announcement "will make it very hard" for the U.S. to reach a trade deal with Canada.

Late Wednesday, Trump said that India would pay a 25% duty on all its exports, in part because it has continued to purchase oil from Russia.

On Thursday, the White House said it had extended the deadline to reach a deal with Mexico for another 90 days, citing the complexity of the trade relationship, which is governed by the trade agreement Trump reached when he NAFTA in his first term.

For smaller countries caught in Trump's cross hairs, the Aug. 1 deadline is particularly difficult because the White House has acknowledged they aren't able to negotiate with every country facing tariff threats. Lesotho, for example, a small country in southern Africa, was hit with a 50% duty on April 2, and even though it was postponed, the threat has already devastated its apparel industry, costing thousands of jobs.

"There's 200 countries,'' the president acknowledged earlier this month. "You can't talk to all of them.''

(Reuters) -A group of U.S. states has filed a lawsuit seeking to block the administration of President Donald Trump from requiring them to hand over information on millions of people who receive food stamp benefits.

The 20 mostly Democratic-led states and Washington, D.C., said the Trump administration's efforts to amass a database of food stamp recipients to check their immigration status and identify fraud violate federal privacy laws and the U.S. Constitution. The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in California on Monday.

About 42 million people receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which is largely funded by the federal government and administered by states. Immigrants in the United States illegally are not eligible for SNAP.

The states in their lawsuit say that federal privacy laws and rules governing state food stamp programs bar them from disclosing applicants' personal information.

"You don't promise to help someone eat, then punish them for sitting at the table," California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, said at a press conference.

New York, Michigan, Illinois and New Jersey are among the other states that joined the lawsuit.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees SNAP, said it does not comment on pending litigation.

The department said in June that it would gather information from states to build the database with the goal of reducing waste and strengthening SNAP, and in keeping with Trump's directives to promote data-sharing across the federal government.

The data sought by the department includes the Social Security numbers, immigration status and other information of people who have received, are receiving or have applied to receive SNAP benefits, according to agency documents. States could lose SNAP funding if they refuse to comply.

The massive U.S. tax cut and policy bill approved by Congress earlier this month makes various changes and cuts to SNAP, including requiring states to partially fund benefits and imposing work requirements and time limits.

Princess Diana's only brother, Charles Spencer, recently shared what appears to be a never-before-seen photo of himself and his late sister from their childhood. Posted to his Instagram account on Tuesday, the black-and-white image features the two of them as children in their swimsuits next to the swimming pool at Park House on Sandringham Estate.

"A long ago summer, by the swimming pool at our childhood home, Park House, Sandringham - Diana and I both proudly showing off our swimming badges (sewn onto our swimming costumes)," Spencer wrote in the caption. "These were awarded (sparingly) by Mrs Lansdowne, a fairly terrifying but very gifted swimming instructor, who came to stay each year. We were never out of that pool."

Diana was born at Park House on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where she grew up and continued to live with her father until the death of her grandfather, the 7th Earl Spencer, in 1975. After that, the family moved to the Spencer family seat at Althorp, a stately house dating back to 1508, in Northamptonshire, in the English Midlands. Diana's siblings, including Charles as well as her sisters Sarah and Jane, also grew up at Park House.

The 9th Earl of Spencer, Charles is also the maternal uncle of Prince William and Prince Harry. While Charles does speak often fondly of his sister, he doesn't share archival photos of her to social media frequently. However, he did share one of her recently on what would have been her 64th birthday on July 1, 2025. Taken in 1967 in Britain's Thorney Wildlife Park, the photo shows the Spencer children along with their father celebrating Diana's 6th birthday, featuring the future Princess of Wales sitting on the back of a camel.

Neeson, 73, replied, "Craig!" as Anderson, 58, coyly quipped, "What? I don't understand the question." Neeson then told Melvin that "I had never met Pamela before. We met on set. And we discovered we had a lovely, budding chemistry as two actors."

Neeson added that their approach to their chemistry was "like, 'Oh, this is nice. Let's not mold this. Let's just let it breathe,' and that's what we did."

Neeson was previously married to British actress Natasha Richardson from 1994 until her death at 45 years old in 2009, while Anderson has had four husbands: Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, rap rocker Kid Rock, poker player Rick Salomon and Dan Hayhurst.

Last week, as the costars posed on the red carpet at the film's London premiere, Anderson leaned up and gave Neeson a smooch on his cheek. As they took photos with one of the film's producers, she was seen clasping the Oscar nominee's hand around her left hip.

On "Today," Melvin playfully told the costars that "we're watching the beginning of the breathing of a budding relationship" – as Anderson nervously laughed – and the journalist added that "America's here for it. We're here for whatever this turns into."

Before the "Today" interview ended, Melvin complimented Anderson, telling the "Last Showgirl" actress that "you bring out a different side of Liam Neeson" and "we want you (both) to come back when it's official."

During a recent "Entertainment Tonight" interview, the pair nearly kissed. As Anderson leaned in to for a near-kiss from Neeson, an "ET" red carpet reporter said they were "so close," before Anderson said, "Yeah, so close." Neeson added, "We're pros."

Last year, when asked whether he was dating, Neeson told People: "No, in a word. I'm past all that." In an Instagram post recapping the film's New York premiere July 29, Anderson's caption included a message of her own: "Love is in the air."

So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley and comedian Patrick Kielty announced their split after 12 years of marriage

They shared a joint statement with PEOPLE, explaining they "have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated"

The former couple also noted they "will continue to be united as loving parents" to their two children, sons Milo and James Patrick

Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty are calling it quits after more than a decade of marriage.

The longtime So You Think You Can Dance host, 48, and the Northern Irish comedian, 54, announced their split on Tuesday, July 29, in a joint statement. "We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated," the pair said, per BBC.

"There is no other party involved," they continued. "We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected."

The former couple concluded by noting that there will be "no further comment" on the matter.

Deeley and Kielty have a long history and first worked together a decade before they got married.

The two co-presented the British talent competition series Fame Academy, which aired for two seasons between 2002 and 2003.

Fast-forward to September 2012, the couple tied the knot in Rome.

In a 2015 interview on Loose Women, Kielty revealed how his and Deeley's friendship turned romantic thanks to a big gesture he made while Deeley was in Beverly Hills and he was in Northern Ireland at "a little Irish pub" around closing time.

When he texted her for her birthday, Kielty remembered, "She said, 'It's just a shame you're not in L.A. because I'm having a lunch tomorrow.' So I said I'll be there."

He then flew around the world and, when he walked into the Beverly Hills Hotel and said hi, Deeley "fell off the chair and we've been together ever since."

Between welcoming her two children with Kielty, Deeley opened up about motherhood.

"I've got so much respect for all moms out there that do it. You have to juggle like crazy and have a team around you," she told PEOPLE at the time. "And whether that's your family, Mom and Dad, nanny … whoever it is, you have this team. It takes a tribe — I can totally understand that now."

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Residents in the Southeast U.S. are no strangers to heat in the summertime, but this week's sweltering hot weather set at least one record and has forecasters urging residents to limit time outside on Tuesday if possible — and stay hydrated.

The all-time high temperature at Tampa International Airport was broken on Sunday when the thermometer hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius). The previous record had been 99 F (37.2 C) in June 2020.

The National Weather Service said Tuesday the prolonged heat is expected to peak in the Southeast at mid-week. A strong upper ridge also was generating a "dangerous and prolonged" heat wave in the central and eastern sections of the country.

No relief in the shade

In Savannah, Georgia, landscaper Darius Cowherd took a break Tuesday in the cab of his work truck after spending the morning mowing grass, trimming bushes and blowing leaves in Forsyth Park in the coastal city's downtown historic district.

Sipping from a giant water bottle almost the size of a gallon jug, he said, "I filled it with ice at 7 this morning and it's all melted by 10:30."

A canopy of live oak trees in much of the park provided little relief.

"It's hot even when you're working in the shade," said Cowherd, who wore a wide-brimmed hat to shield his face and neck.

The National Weather Service predicted temperatures in Savannah would reach 97 F (36 C) Tuesday, with heat index values — what the temperature feels like — approaching a broiling 110 F (43 C).

Breaking records

The heat wave was expected to set new records across Florida on Tuesday, with highs around 100 F. Heat index values in the Tampa Bay area were expected to range from 113 to 118 F (45 to 47.7 C).

"We have extreme heat warnings in Georgia, down through northern Florida that would also include places like the Tampa Bay and Orlando metro areas," said Peter Mullinax, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. "We're going to see today more opportunities for temperatures to be near 100 again."

However, rain is in the forecast for Wednesday, which will likely cool things off a bit.

Extreme heat warnings also were issued in the country's center from New Orleans up to St. Louis, the meteorologist said. The heat index value on Tuesday was expected to reach as high as 110 F around the St. Louis area and in southwest Illinois.

'Too much' heat

In downtown Savannah, scattered tourists trudged along the sidewalks despite the heat. A few carried umbrellas to keep the sun at bay.

A block away, Luis Hernandez was working in direct sun on a ladder painting second-floor windows on a 19th century home. He wore long sleeves to protect against sunburn.

Hernandez said a co-worker made sure he and his fellow house painters had a cooler filled with drinking water. About every two hours, they would go inside to take breaks in the air-conditioning.

"Sure, it's hot," Hernandez said — almost "too much."

With temperatures climbing Tuesday afternoon in Tallahassee, Willie Gaines and his workers took a break from painting white traffic lines on a newly paved road near the All Saints neighborhood. As they sat in the shade of tree, heat radiated off the blacktop. The air was thick with the fumes of fresh asphalt.

"Everybody's complaining they ain't never seen it this hot," Gaines said.

If you have a trip to the Grand Canyon coming up, there's more bad news: Containment on a large wildfire burning on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon has continued to fall.

The so-called Dragon Bravo Fire has been burning since it was sparked by a lightning strike on July 4, and fire officials now say that increased mapping shows it has grown to 111 square miles, or nearly twice the size of Washington, D.C.

But what has really grabbed the attention of the public is how the blaze's overall containment was cut in half over the weekend, dropping from 26% on Friday to just 13% on Monday. That number dropped even more Tuesday, to 9%.

"The way we calculate containment in an active wildfire is it is a percent of the total fire perimeter that is out cold," Southwest Area Incident Management Team public information officer Lisa Jennings told KTAR News. "We actually have our firefighters going out there and making sure that those areas are contained, and so that feet of contained line continues to increase, but at the same time, the fire has seen a lot of growth."

More Historic Structures Threatened

This wildfire has already claimed at least 70 buildings, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, and has shut down the North Rim for the remainder of the 2025 season, but now, more buildings are in its path. According to Fox 10 Phoenix, the historic Kaibab Lodge in Fredonia, which was built in 1926, is also being threatened by the fire.

The lodge sits just 9 miles from the North Rim Lookout Tower and has been spared so far, but it's one of the buildings that the 968 personnel assigned to the fire have been working tirelessly to protect from the flames.

"Just say a prayer," lodge owner Larry Innes told Fox 10 Phoenix. "I mean, it's kind of out of our hands. I mean, the things are working our way right now and let's hope it keeps going that way for the next few days."

Another Hot Day Ahead

Unfortunately, conditions are not getting more favorable for firefighters who are battling this massive inferno. And although the North Rim is now closed to visitors, anyone in the area will certainly feel the heat.

"Extreme heat will also impact the North Rim as high temperatures could range from 105 to 113 degrees," said weather.com digital meteorologist Jennifer Gray. "An extreme heat warning is in place as visitors are urged not to descend below 4,000 feet, especially during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

"This is an extremely dangerous heat that can lead to heat illness and even death," she added. "Take the alerts seriously, and make sure you stay hydrated if you are visiting the Grand Canyon today."

And What About The Smoke?

"Unhealthy air quality will persist for another day along the North Rim due to the Dragon Bravo Fire nearby," said Gray. "High winds and low humidity will continue to work against firefighters as they battle the flames."

The death of an Alabama toddler who was left inside a hot car for hours was "forgotten" by a state contractor, police reportedly said.

Ke'Torrius Starkes Jr. in Birmingham, Ala. had been in foster care when he died and was being "transported" to a visit with his father by a Department of Human of Human Resources contractor when he died, the department previously confirmed to PEOPLE.

He was allegedly left in a car for five hours in the afternoon as temperatures hit triple digits in Alabama, police said, WVTM13 reported.

Speaking to NBC News, Birmingham police Sgt. Laquitta Wade called the incident an accident.

"At this time, the only thing that I can say is that we believe it [the child's death] was accidental," Wade told NBC News, saying that a contractor had "forgotten that the child was in the vehicle."

Police previously told PEOPLE that the contractor, who has since been terminated, has been cooperative with the investigation.

Wade further told the outlet that any charging decisions would be made by prosecutors.

Ke'Torrius' family lawyer Courtney French said in an interview with PEOPLE, "Had he been with his parents, nothing like this would have ever occurred."

French told PEOPLE a DHR contractor was taking Ke'Torrius, who was in temporary foster care, to his daycare around 11:30 a.m. after a supervised visit with his biological father.

However, the woman then allegedly left him in the car and went shopping for her family, French said. Once the DHR contractor returned to their own residence, she allegedly left Ke'Torrius in the car for five hours.

"This is a parent's worst nightmare. Our baby should be alive," the child's parents said in a statement through French, per the outlet.

DHR previously told AL.com that the contract provider has since terminated the employee.

A teenage girl from Milwaukee is missing following a disturbing phone call received by her mother.

According to authorities, 13-year-old Jamyla Norwood has not spoken with her family since Monday, July 28, around 3:26 p.m. local time. The police are describing her as a critically missing person, meaning she is believed to be in danger.

According to local radio station WTMJ and Fox affiliate WITI, Norwood's mother was speaking to her on the phone when she heard a female voice in the background shouting that she would "beat Jamyla and push her down the stairs."

Per the outlets, police said the phone disconnected and no one has heard from Norwood since then. Following the call, the teen's mother received text messages from an unknown number claiming her daughter is dead.

"The Milwaukee Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in locating a critical missing person, Jamyla NORWOOD," a statement obtained by PEOPLE from Milwaukee Police Department read. "Jamyla was last in contact with her family the afternoon of Monday, July 28th, 2025."

The statement added that Norwood was last "believed to be in the area of N. 24th St. and W. Burleigh St." in Milwaukee.

According to WITI, the teenager's mother believes her daughter's life is at risk.

Noorwood is described as Black, standing at 5'3" and weighing around 120 pounds.

According to authorities, she was wearing a pink bonnet, black T-shirt, blue jean pants and yellow and black shoes when she was last seen.

Police also stated she didn't have any money for transportation and is therefore likely to be on foot.

Anyone with information or sightings of Norwood is asked to contact the Milwaukee Police Department District 5 at 414-935-7252.

According to a previous report by WITI, Norwood previously went missing in October 2024. However, she was later found safe.

LONDON (AP) — The U.K. will recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza, allows the U.N. to bring in aid and takes other steps toward long-term peace, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday.

Starmer, who is under mounting domestic pressure over the issue as scenes of hunger in Gaza horrify many Britons, convened a rare summertime Cabinet meeting to discuss the situation there. It came after he discussed the crisis with President Donald Trump during a meeting in Scotland on Monday.

Trump told reporters on Monday that he didn't mind Starmer "taking a position" on Palestinian statehood. On his flight back to the U.S. on Tuesday, Trump said the two never discussed the U.K. potentially recognizing a Palestinian state.

"We have no view on that," Trump said.

Israel rejects the announcement

Starmer said that Britain will recognize a state of Palestine before the United Nations General Assembly, "unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term, sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of a two-state solution.

"And this includes allowing the U.N. to restart the supply of aid, and making clear there will be no annexations in the West Bank," he said.

It seems highly unlikely that the government of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu could meet the conditions, which cut to the heart of the most intractable issues in the conflict. Netanyahu rejects the two-state solution on both nationalistic and security grounds.

Israel's foreign ministry said it rejected the British statement.

"The shift in the British government's position at this time, following the French move and internal political pressures, constitutes a reward for Hamas and harms efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the release of hostages," the ministry said on X.

Starmer also repeated U.K. demands that Hamas release all the hostages it holds, agree to a ceasefire, disarm and "accept that they will play no part in the government of Gaza."

Starmer said in a televised statement that his government will assess in September "how far the parties have met these steps" before making a final decision on recognition.

Britain has long supported the idea of an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel, but has said recognition should come as part of a negotiated two-state solution to the conflict.

But Starmer said Britain was willing to take the step because "the very idea of a two-state solution is reducing and feels further away today than it has for many years." He said that despite the set of conditions he set out, Britain believes that "statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people."

Growing pressure on Israel

Pressure to formally recognize Palestinian statehood has mounted since French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country will become the first major Western power to recognize a Palestinian state in September.

As with France, British recognition would be largely symbolic, but it's part of a broader European and global shift against Israel and could increase diplomatic pressure for an end to the conflict.

More than 140 countries recognize a Palestinian state, including a dozen in Europe. Macron's announcement last week made France the first Group of Seven country — and the largest in Europe — to take that step.

Europe has widely soured on Israel over Gaza. Countries including Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands have sought to aggressively pressure Israel to let in more aid and cease military operations.

More than 250 of the 650 lawmakers in the House of Commons have signed a letter urging the British government to recognize a Palestinian state.

Britain has a particular historic role as the former governing power of what was then Palestine and author of the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which backed the establishment of a Jewish homeland.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said Britain bore a "special burden of responsibility."

"Our support for Israel, its right to exist, and the security of its people, is steadfast," Lammy told a meeting at the U.N. in New York. "However, the Balfour Declaration came with the solemn promise that nothing shall be done, nothing which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of the Palestinian people as well. And colleagues, this has not been upheld, and it is a historical injustice which continues to unfold."

France welcomed Britain's announcement.

″The United Kingdom is joining the momentum created by France for the recognition of the state of Palestine," French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot posted on X.

Omar Awadallah, assistant to the Palestinian Authority's foreign minister, welcomed Starmer's announcement and said the U.K. has a historic responsibility to recognize a Palestine state and would be "correcting a historic injustice," if it follows through in September. The Palestinian Authority has limited autonomy in pockets of the occupied West Bank.

Scott Riccardi, the true star of Jeopardy season 41 is addressing mounting fan speculation that he deliberately threw Friday's Final Jeopardy question, bringing his 16-game victory streak to an end.

From the category "20th Century names," host Ken Jennings read the clue: "According to one obituary, in 1935 he owned 13 magazines, eight radio stations, two movie companies and $56 million in real estate."

Any cinema fan could have doubled their money on the spot with the answer: William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper magnate and inspiration for Orson Welles' towering classic Citizen Kane. But Riccardi's mind went to a different 20th-century cinema icon: aerospace entrepreneur and RKO Pictures founder Howard Hughes.

Capping his earnings at a stunning $455,000, Riccardi lost to Jonathan Hugendubler, an adjunct professor from Baltimore. But the fact that the man who correctly answered dozens of complicated questions on subjects ranging from robotics to world languages to ancient architecture missed a question about one of the more prominent figures in American history isn't sitting well with some viewers.

Fortunately, the 26-year-old mechanical engineer and New Jersey native took to Reddit on Friday to explain what led to his loss.

"My mind unfortunately went straight to Howard Hughes mostly due to overestimating the importance of the movie companies part of the clue," he wrote.

While Hearst did establish two movie studios throughout his prolific career — International Film Service, an early animation studio, and Cosmpolitan Productions, co-founded with Paramount's Adolph Zukor — Hughes' RKO was and remains the much better-known studio.

"Any previous [Final Jeopardies] that had come to mind immediately had worked out, so I trusted my initial response on this," Riccardi continued. "Hearst wasn't on my mind at all until the moment [competitor Charlotte Cooper's] answer was revealed, and even then it didn't immediately strike me as correct until Ken confirmed it."

He also admitted he was "especially unprepared to respond correctly to a clue about Hearst" despite making a previous mental note to keep the magnate in mind due to his appearance in "archived practice clues." He was also bewildered by "a confusing amount of three-named Williams in publishing (William Randolph Hearst, William Lloyd Garrison, and William F. Buckley, to name a few)."

Ultimately, Riccardi chalked it up to "several information near-misses and a poor understanding of the timeline in the clue [that] really piled up to prevent me from getting what I now understand to be a very gettable clue."

Still, the champ wrote that he's "glad to have had the chance to be a meaningful part of this season" and extended a hearty "congratulations to Jonathan for the amazing win!"

Riccardi reflected on the brighter side of his Jeopardy wins with the series' executive producer, Sarah Whitcomb-Foss, on a short episode of the Jeopardy "Winner's Circle" on Saturday.

"It's hard to believe I even came this far. I feel like I barely won a lot of my first few games, and then I had a pretty tough week where I kind of ramped up," Riccardi said. When Whitcomb-Foss mentioned he'd officially entered the show's Leaderboard of Legends, or the series' top 10 performers (Riccardi's 16-game streak left him tied for 10th place with Ryan Long, but he's the series' 8th highest-earning player), Riccardi admitted he originally believed, "There's no way I'm hitting any of those. That's just not going to happen, like how could it?"

Fans who loved Riccardi's gameplay don't have to say goodbye just yet. He's set to become his season's frontrunner in the annual Tournament of Champions parallel program, which pits each season's top winners against one another.
