'Living in cuckoo land': Rooney says INEOS 'deluded' if they think three players will make United successful Stretty News Wed, October 28, 2026 at 6:35 AM UTC · 2 min read About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Wayne Rooney has suggested that Manchester United's attacking revamp last summer was nowhere near good enough.
The frontline rebuild consisted of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha being brought in from RB Leipzig, Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers, respectively.
Each player did breach the 10-goal mark in their maiden Premier League campaigns, although, for the fees they commanded, that would be the bare minimum expectation.
Since 2026/2027 got underway, Mbeumo has been United's highest performer in attack , returning four goals in the opening eight league matches, whereas Cunha has only scored once in his eight appearances.
Sesko, unfortunately, has suffered a re-aggravation of a previous injury problem, which has kept him sidelined since before the September international break.
It remains to be seen when he will return to the fold, but he did open his account before sustaining the injury by scoring an equaliser away to Everton.
Weighing in on the trio, Rooney said on Stick to United : "They're deluded if they think the front three that they've brought in are good enough; they're not.
"They want some players who've played in the Premier League. They're bringing players in from Wolves, from Brentford, who have done well and done well for them clubs.
"But to take this current group of Manchester United players, for them to sign and to take this team into the next level, into the Champions League, you know, you're living in cuckoo land if you think they're going to achieve that. So the squad is absolutely a million miles away from being champions."
